SNES- Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Earthbound, Contra 3, Castlevania 4, Illusion of Gaia, too much to fucking mention.
The SNES was the greatest video game juggernaut ever, I still play it more than PS2/GC.
NES- every Mario, every Mega Man and Castlevania, Little Nemo, GI Joe, too many to mention.
Genesis- every Sonic, every Shinobi, every Streets of Rage, every Shining Force, Dynamite Headdy, too many to mention.
Playstation and N64 don't seem as ''classic'', but I guess in a few years I'll be looking back at them fondly.

NES - Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Metroid, Tetris, Donkey Kong, CONTRA!!!!
SNES - Final Fantasy VI (III in US -- BEST FINAL FANTASY EVER!!!!!!!), Super Metroid, Super Castlevania, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Super Street Fighter II
SEGA - Phantasy Star I, II and IV, Sonic and Knuckles (especially when connected to Sonic3), Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Splatterhouse II and III, Streets of Rage I/II/III, Mutant League Hockey (KILL THE REF KILL THE REF KILL THE REF!!!!)
And if any of you are hardcore into 2D, BUY ALL of the Castlevania games on GBA -- every one of them KICKS ASS retro side-scrolling vampire slayer style.
And Guilty Gear X2 is on my list as one of the best 2D fighters ever next to Street Fighter Alpha 3. X2 makes me miss my PS2.... because Gamecube barely has any decent fighters besides Super Smash Bros. Melee. ... until Soul Calibur comes out.
It is just me, or does it seem like Castlevania fans could give a shit less about it going 2D?

Excellent, so it is! Good to see it getting a mention. I was amazed by it at the time, but that was something on the order of 23 years ago :D
Other games I've loved over the years have been Rasputin, Head Over Heels and Starglider for the ZX Spectrum and my current fave, Spyro the Dragon for the Playstation. None of those got a mention in that top 100 though

I'm not sure the cd-i was released worldwide, but even here in the netherlands it was not that popular. The cool thing was that it could play video-cd's, and games. Now i know the games are really bad. It was something like the 3DO system, ever played that? It featured a lot of the same games. The best were those American Laser games, like Mad Dog Mccree. So a shooting game with live actors (fmv)....

JAroen, you should know of it as you were a dutchie too! i know cd-i was bad, and the games were never in comparison with the nintendo alikes. still, some games were fun to play. And the video-cd's were pretty good. plus, DVD compatible.
Oh by the way, you even had Zelda and Mario games exclusively licensed to CD-i. what about that?

man, that list has made me nostalgic. Is it just me, or were videogames just more fun before all these "next-gen" consoles? That list brought back so many memories.
And check out how many nintendo-games are in there :-D Especially in the top20... nintendo just rules.
I wanna buy all those great remakes for GBA (all the mario's + a link to the past), but they're all so expensive :-/
