all musicians must have a skeleton in their cupboard
somewhere... :)

coldcut featuring yazz and the plastic population? they must
cringe at the sight of them dressed up to the nines
pretenting to do a bit of scratching whilst miming on top of
the pops!

808 state, a couple of the tracks on lfo's 1st album, some
of radiohead's early b-sides and pre-record contract demos
and live tracks, and a lot more... but i've learned to
appreciate this sort of music in context of musical progress
and just different eras, like early britpop, the house music
era, etc. it's not bad at all, just not my fav or the most
advanced..

its worrse when an arrtist has an amazing 1st album and then
it just goes rright down hill yet you keep buying just in
case.

The costumes and dance routine maybe, but the track is top
notch!

Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook)...even though a lot of you
probably hate him now...

Housemartins anyone? :)

NIN - Purest Feeling... though it isn't really bad! ^^

aw don't say it's bad just cos everyone else does uzim... i
like the right track demos almost as much as PHM the album.

...including "purest feeling"! it's one of the few fun nin
songs.

i didn't say it was bad! : )

but i think it can be considered as embarassing nonetheless,
compared to the other NIN works... for the ambiance and
such.. ^^

i don't even think boc maxima is that great.. but the other
stuff that's leaked recently, which are "confirmed"
legitimate, aren't impressive at all...

uzim yea i see your point, a lot of trent's early stuff is
way embarassing.. his voice on "purest feeling" and a lot of
the other tracks, the programming on "kinda i want to", and
hell let's not forget Option 30! certainly not a graceful
start, but at least the first nin album is a classic and
everything since has been mostly high quality.

"NIN - Purest Feeling... though it isn't really bad! ^^"

This is pre-PHM then? Never heard of it.

I would say Ministrys' "with sympathy." is not great.

i've got one better for you still: Dr.Dre & The World-Class
Wreckin' Cru - not to say that Dr.Dre is good nowdays
either, but back then, he actually used to look all prissy
and wear makeup onstage:

before he started smokin' lotsa blunts

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-05-19 16:09 [#00705893]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

btw i meant "kinda i want to" DEMO, not the finished
version

a lot of the early PHM demos are very rudimentary, but i
find the cheap equipment quite charming really.. some of the
demos i prefer to the finished products

hehe oh man you got a good one there

ever see the vh1 behind the music on dre? it has some more
footage and audio from those days. anyway, i think dre's
production is still top notch! i can't wait to hear the
rakim album, they recorded like 60 songs together.

offline manticore from London (ON) (Canada) on 2003-05-19 16:22 [#00705907]
Points: 651 Status: Addict

i was trying to find some better ones still, ones with
full-on sparkly makeup and all (like the ones on the VH1
show!), but looks like the Dre Police stepped in and mopped
up the early-years mess - it would ruin Dre's reputation
among hip-hop fans!

N.W.A. production is classic, but it's been pretty well
downhill since, as far as i'm concerned.

but Rakim & Dre? it probably would be good if not for Top-40
beats and shit guest appearances by the likes of Lil' Kim,
50 Cent (or whatever awful artists are bound to end up on
the typically gargantuan "feat. so and so" list of guests)

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-05-19 16:27 [#00705913]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

oh i dunno if i'd call dre's beats top 40 even if they
invariably end up hits. he's gotten increasingly more
musical since NWA, though i'm certainly a fan of his early
more stripped down sound as well.

guest artists on rakim (check June): click should
be great if dre doesn't fuck it up (not as a producer, but
as a label owner... see eve's aftermath debut, last emperor,
knoc'turnal, hittman, etc... none of these albums ever came
out)

mmm! new Gangstarr! just when i had given up hope of ever
hearing from them again! if this doesn't make mainstream
hip-hop good again, i don't know what will!

I agree with that!! Early fsol isn't up to much either!

there is a couple of good tracks on accelerator but most of
it is pretty cack.

well, Classics by Aphex Twin is pretty shit!! I suppose that
with Radiohead, Pablo Honey is pretty mediocre... but it
doesn't suck, it just isn't that great...

so papua new guinea is rubbish is it? which is why is it
constantly referred to as the best dance track ever!
probably not by you though it seems :)

anywayz, brian dougans did loads of stuff before fsol and
thats all excellent stuff

papua new guinea was the birth of creative 'break' use, in
an electronic style. Everything can be critisized in
retrospect if you have the energy to do it....'the laughing
gnome' by bowie is funny!

without papua new guinea there wouldn't be jungle/d'n
b/drill and bass whatever as you know it.

There's two breaks that were used with synchopated starts,
the first that really 'worked' the dancefloor....I'll have a
listen again now, I've forgot.....

Don't you think i know that!!! papua new guinea is fucking
excellent, i said that there were a couple of good tracks
(read my post again,please)
Expander is also excellent, the rest is filler.

I own humanoid sessions 84-88 top stuff i hasten to add.
Fsol sorted it out with lifeforms which is one of my
favorite albums ever!!!

Tom Jenkinson´s "Sausage Roll" track off ChaosAD´Buzz
Caner is a beauty....... its like a retro-pisstake of the
kind of thing your talking about... purposefully bad old
stuff, taking the piss out of old stuff but bloody good
anyway!

V-Proc rocks btw

other albums, excluding polynomial-c. i luv the phloam
starts out.

though its somewhat lame by todays standards.. i wouldnt
call classics embarrasing.. some of its pretty
badass..especially for its time ..just listen to the other
'hardcore' techno that was being released then (like the
prodigy's charly)

and of course remember he was still a teenager when he made
most of it
