anyone up for interpreting some of vespertine's lyrics?
for starters, what the hell is "an echo, a stain" about?! sounds like a song about abuse (child? spouse?), which seems pretty incharacteristic for her. it's probably the darkest damn bjork song i've ever heard... there's something wrong about me being able to throw it in a mix with squarepusher's "mutilation colony."
anyone have any questions about some of her earlier songs? i could probably handle those, been listening to her since like '95..

I think alot of the bjork lyrics are written by 'Sjon' which means 'vision' in Icelandic, try translating something how you would say it into say....african, then translate it back. That's a trick they use.

funny, that line was explained to me by someone on here a year ago.. i found it interesting cos i'm scandinavian in ancestry. i'll see if i can find the thread and paste it cos i'll mess it up otherwise.
Sjon is an icelandic poet i thought, Jivver? co-wrote bachelorette, etc.?

Scandanavians see them selves as being unhibited as in they have communal changing rooms, nudity is 'normal' etc but they are quite mililtant with other things that others take for granted...I think.

is selmasongs fair game for discussing or did lars von trier write the lyrics? i could never figure it out, the liner notes are confusing. to me it seems like bjork wrote or co-wrote the music and lars wrote most of the lyrics? or maybe dictated what they'd be about? cos there are some strange lines on that album too.

I took that line to represent that she was turning herself inside out, raw and bleeding, as a form of revenge. Kind of like Sylvia Plath's 'Lady Lazarus'. The theme figures in Pluto too.

it's stated differently in various places, but sun in my mouth is either entirely of a poem by e.e. Cummings, or it incorporates a poem of his. bjork said that there are certain poets she reads over and over again, Cummungs being one of them.
also, harm of will was written by harmony korine. i'm sure many of you know this already though.

vespertine is kinda bittersweet for me.. it's not a light album by any means (except for a couple tracks) and so restrained.. there's a kind of melancholy to it that's hard to put my finger on.. but it's not as overtly dark as a lot of homogenic and parts of post

I am guessing that since she does not sing these lines in English, this is what she is singing in Icelandic.

i don't try to decipher lyrics like that on an analytical level because who knows what aspect of the turtle bjork or lars refers to. since she is talking about the heart i just feel it... there is a certain feeling level of response i get when i hear it that doesn't really translate to anything specific, but the feeling provides a complete meaning to me.

Man, believe it or not...that was the line that just slapped me into reality....I just adore that line. That and the imagery in
'I'm a path of cinders, burning under your feet. You're the one who walks me, I'm your one way street.'
Very few songs can convey the hardships and beauty of love simultaneously like this one can.
