Optical Mouse Trouble

I've just (finally) been given an optical mouse in work.
After asking for one for a year. And having to explain to my
IT department what it is!!!!

It looks like a cheapy one, and no drivers came with it.
I've plugged it in, restarted, and the fucking cursor is
jumping around like a loon! If I go in slow, smooth
movements it's ok, but if I change direction sharply, then
up/down movements are reversed and it's just going all over
the place.

Any ideas, anyone?

*tries manically to hit "post" button*

Great quote on the back - "Eradicates erratic mouse
movement". It would only be more erratic if I slipped it a
sheet of acid.

It's a Genius Netscroll+Eye, babe

Make sure it is a surface with a textured pattern like a
wood grain desk. Completely plain smooth mouse mats can
cause problems like you described.

I think you need the drivers for it. I;ve just sent you the
users manual, you should be able to download the drivers
online at www.yourdrivers.com

Nice one Ceri. I suppose I should have tried removing the
mousemat before posting eh :D

I've gone through a variety of mats and none of them are
suitable, so I've just plonked it on my desk and it works
fine.

I had the same problem (in fact all the labs at my uni did
after I successfully lobbyed them to get optical mice)!

why would I ask if your desk was clean if you were
meant to have it on a mouse mat. I would have asked if your
mouse mat was clean if that was the case

I needed a rougher mousemat, the one I was using was too
smooth and shiney :)

Hoorah! Someone else who uses the correct plural! I used to,
but over time reverted to "mice" out of convention.

Jar: fabric coated mouse mats work fine with optical mice.

What the fuck's the problem with an ordinary mouse anyway?
Is the exertion of pushing the ball around getting too much
for you? Fucking wuss.

I hate optical mice/mouses/meeses. And tracker balls suck
too =op

I've got a fucking wireless optical mouse here and it
fucking sucks. I don't know why they got one of those. One
with a wire would've done. Anyway. Optical is great.
Contrary to what Ceri has said about using them..

I use mine on a smooth plain surface with no texture and it
goes a treat.

Well my job entails utmost precision. It's no good drawing a
3D model of a building and giving it zig zag fucking walls.
It's alright for you, the only precision you need to watch
for is making sure all the food you serve goes on the
kiddies plates.
