I just heard this track on the radio and it wasn't really what i expected from their new album actually..
it didn't really sound like Kid A and Amnesiac to me .. more like the stuff they did before that..
kind of a let down to be honest
any opinions?

The new album is a more coherent mix of the two styles. Personally I think it is a massive improvement over Kid A and Amnesiac as both of them were forgettable noise with the exception of a few tracks.

Not one of my favourite tracks from the "demos" by any means.
To write off Kid A and Amnesiac as forgettable noise is a bit much though... some excellent tracks reside on those records.

Which is why I said with the exception of a few tracks :D
I actually preferred the reworkings they did on a lot of the tracks, also the I might be wrong live EP/album was better than both Kid A and Amnesiac, with better more emotional versions of the tracks on.

i think in an interview after amnesiac, thom york admitted that their next album was going to be sort of a step back...they were not interested, i guess, in continuing to pursue the sort of "groundbreaking" pop (i say groundbreaking pop, because that's the only ground that it broke) they were working on...considering the overwhelming success of kid A, i would have a hard time believing they did it for any other reason than their own personal preference.
i am inclined, however, to always like them for reasons beyond my control.

more interestingly, this "step back" could be considered as a farewell to the mainstream audience as their record contract runs out after this album... i hope they start their own label since they already have their own company and sure hell don't rely on EMI (when making the music at least). they have spoken about this in the past... let's see if they are as no logo as they say they are! they'd be the first in their league to do this i think.

there there is one of the best songs I've heard in quite a while. My God I love that climax with the howling guitar-solo and Thom's soothing singing. This song keeps giving me goosebumps. I just can't name 1 favorite on this album because there's 2 many of 'em. "I will" for example is another spine chiller, Thom's quality of singing is just out of anyone's league atm. There best overall album yet imo.

I agree on Thom's singing, there is so much emotion in his voice, different from the drivel fed to us daily via radio and TV. He could be singing about anything, but as long as he has that special TY passion, I'll listen.

They've become a prime example of pretenciousness in modern day music. Shit bands use them to try and elevate the meaning in their tripe lyrics and appear more "meaningful".

NME: Tell us about these subtitles.
TY: I was having trouble with titles. 'Hail To The Thief' was also called 'The Gloaming' and I wanted to subtitle that, so I decided to carry on. I have this big list that I carry around and they come from there. And from kids programmes, because I was watching those. Mostly Bagpuss, I like Bagpuss.
