That's my attitude, sort the human issues out first. By all means, protect wildlife if it's to our benefit (IE to prevent disruption of the food chain), but I don't see why we should spend money on "unneccesary conservation" whilst there are people in poverty in this country.

This is such an old hackneyed argument that I don't have the strength to muster up an outrageous statement. We all know the answer to the question. The further removed creatures are from the likeness of human beings, the more easy it is to inflict pain on them. If fish screamed in pain and looked more human we would not touch them with a bargepole. Or maybe it's because they taste good.

What do you mean with self obsessed neurotic vegetarians?
I'm a vegetarian for 6 years now, and I don't eat fish either. I do drink milk every now and then, I do eat cheese (vegetarian cheese, not made with rennet from calf stomach) and I do eat eggs of free chicken. I know vegetarianism isn't perfect, but at least it's something.
I do believe fishing should be banned. I don't think it is necessary that the government should spend money on controlling the ban, because there are worse things happening. But it's not so that because worse things are happening we should ignore this cruelty.

Even though fishing isn't banned, a huge amount is spent of "fishery protection" every year. Naval ship patrol, and personnel are helicoptered over the horizon to a fisheries boat and abseil to the deck. Such drastic, fast action is neccesary as boats using illegal nets just dump them overside if they see naval boats approaching. As a result it is a very expensive operation to run. If there were a fishing ban I imagine you'd need to increase fishery protection patrols by at least 300% not to mention all the additional park rangers/coast guard patrols to catch small scale fishers.
I blame the French and their trawler-pair fishing for the depletion of fish in the channel.

A ban of fishing would only be useful if all countries would ban fishing of course. If not, it would only mean that one country has to import fish and that others have more export and will fish more.
I didn't know the UK spends a great deal of money on controlling yet. But I think that the key issue might be that those against fishing should think about giving up eating fish. The fish is only caught for consumption, so if we stop consuming...
This would of course mean unemploymency, so the matter is quite complicated. I am not naïve though, a change like this (all people giving up fish consumption) will not come. But in the end: if you're against something, the only effective thing one can do, is stop the consumption of it, and trying to make others aware of why you stopped consuming. Giving up the consumption of something is an easy step, and it doesn't mean you can't focus (or let your government focus) on other, indeed more important, things.

Yes, fishery protection isn't covered much in the news as it's seen by some as the naval equivalent of being on traffic duty in the police, but there's always at least one UK naval vessel doing it when we're not at war. I know a lot of people who've done it and it's meant to be quite fun. They effectively sieze the fisherman's boats, search them then leave. Most (law abiding) captains really like it as it protects their interests if they catch people using illegal nets.

We in Sweden tried to ban "torsk"-fishing - I think it's called Cod - but the EU doesn't prevent other countries to go in and take our quota in case we stop so it was really a question of setting an example and cutting the swedish fishermen out of bussiness or continue as before and claim that the problem is not that big anyways... Gotta love the EU, it's nice to know that the taxmoney is going to a good cause.

"sort out the rapists and murderers first, when you've don that, sort out fishermen."
There are many studies, including a extensive 20 year FBI one, that show a direct correllation between the abuse of animals to the abuse of people. A high percentage of murderers subjected animals to abuse -- particularly as children.
I think the argument that we should look after the human species first is putting the cart before the horse. If we can't treat animals with respect what chance is there of treating each other that way?

Yes, but that's animal abuse- that means torturing animals for fun. The main point of fishing (at least for the majority of people) isn't to inflict pain on fish or demonstrate your power over them, that's just a bi-product...
As an aside, the RSPCA are concerned that there are growing numbers of teenagers torturing animals.

Amusingly, a lot of "pro choice" people who are keen to point out that even though it has been discovered foetuses feel pain from abortions, it is unlikely to be as distressing for them as they are not sentient don't apply this argument when concerning inflicting pain on animals.

Exactly what is the point of fishing then? I mean, if you're gonna eat your catch fair enough. But what is the main purpose of angling?
You may not set out to inflict pain on fish but, if this new research is to be believed, they do feel pain surely that's a reason not to fish?

I know some people fish for the fun of it, however, as cruel as this is, a lot of people that do this use "humane hooks" that dissolve in time and that cause no lasting damage to the fish. They also release them afterwards. Very few people nowadays catch fish and just leave them on the beach. The few sports fishermen I know who don't eat the fish they catch (they're too pussy to gut them themselves) sell them to fishmongers.
I don't fish myself, but I used to crab fish. That is completely humane when done properly and only once have I injured a crab doing it.

There is a difference. I mean, a bear has to eat fish to survive, and won't kill more fish than necessary. Men kill fish for fun, and also, it's not really so natural, and definately not necessary for survival.
Maybe in a tribal situation, that's different. I have nothing against fishing for surviving. I mean, if I was to leave for a deserted Island, one of the things I would take with me would be a knife to kill animals while I'm a vegetarian. I would bring an angle, to be able to eat fish if the fruits on that Island wouldn't be enough to live healthy.

While my friend held on to the freaked out neddy, i rang the RSPCA who told me to keep it in my back garden for the night. They said they couldnt do anything to help me for a few days.
Most stupid advise i had ever heard! I let the horse go and went fishing!
the people who go hunting for foxes are toffy nose posh knobs who have way too much money and time. At least the majority of fishermen are down2earth working class type :)

since when do only MEN!!! fish.......eh???
i fly fish, i have for years and i even can make my OWN flies. most fly fisherman (not all) catch and release.....the hooks used are BARBLESS and thus the fish is not hurt or tortured and once the hook is removed it swims away to be caught ANOTHER day.
i have to admit i've never looked at fishing as animal abuse, and truth be told it certainly is. making an arguement FOR fishing seems cruel in a way because to some FISH are not FOOD but harmless lil creatures swimming around enjoying their lives.
i enjoy fishing and i think if it's for FOOD (which in some cases it is) it's something that will sustain human life, and if you catch and release and don't harm the fish it's OK too.....i don't agree banning is in order.
FOX HUNTING is nother matter entirely......that UPPER class torture fest is just inhumane any way you look at it, it's for a bunch of bored peepz who need something to chase in order to feel alive........bahhhhh

Fox hunting and angling. Hmmm, is there really a difference? Sure, fox hunting sets out to kill the quarry but how many of the UK's estimated 4 million fishermen have caused the death of a fish -- intentionally or otherwise?
If the end result is that you inflict pain on an animal in pursuit of your chosen leisure actitvity then any distinction between hunting and fishing is bogus.
Can't people just enjoy nature/widlife for it's intrinsic value?
"As long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love"
