Challenge to the MUSICIANS

here is my challenge, tho I'm not expecting much uptake
since it's a grand task: compose a symphony.

that's it. I want, as well as an mp3 of the final, the score
too - this can either be a scan or a photocopy of the score
e-mailed or posted to me, or a MIDI or Sibelius file.

A standard symphony has 3 movements, and lasts between 25
and 40 minutes - those are just rough guidelines for you ;)

There is no time limit, so I urge you to study music
somewhat before embarking on it - take your time and learn
at the same time!

Even if you're not going to do it, please leave your
signature so I know - those of you who DO take me up on this
challenge, GOOD LUCK and happy learning.

marlowe

What do you get out of this?

me personally? I get to listen to some new symphonies.
There's no great cash prize involved - composing a symphony
would be reward enough.

You could get them to come around your house, and redecorate
that would be cool, and maybe dig the garden.....think about
it!

i hate to say no to bill murray but im just too damn lazy to
spend more than 3 hours on a track :D

its become really apparent to me lately that im still deep
down a real techno head :)

Submitted for your approval: Beethoven's 6th symphony.

It's "found" art, or plunderphonics, if you will.

What do I win?

Oh, I didn't read far enough - no reward?

I'll just take my Beethoven somewhere else then. :-P

I've been meaning to do a "proper" piece for strings for
years now. I'm getting happier with the quality of samples
of string instruments so I think I'll go for this.

My music theory is a bit rusty having not done classical for
almost 10 years, but this'll be a good excuse to re learn
what I knew and hopefully learn a bit more.

Good thing there's no deadlines as it'll take me months :)

I know better than to expect symphonies from people in a
week - especially if they have to learn or reacquaint
themselves with music theory and form!

that's too damn long of a track. Plus I suck with melody.

i'm happy to complete a 7 minute track in a week, something
like this would take me many many months... have you ever
created a symphony before, paul? i'd like to hear it!

I still ask myself 'why' ??

"that's it. I want, as well as an mp3 of the final, the
score
too - this can either be a scan or a photocopy of the score

e-mailed or posted to me, or a MIDI or Sibelius file. "

Sounds a bit suspect to me!

paul wants proof you made it ypurself, I guess.

I will not participate however as I neither have the skill
nor the knowledge to accomplish such a huge task.

yes it would be hard to come up with evidence i actually
wrote it beforehand since i cannot read notes. ha! so, there

LOL, don't worry, I'm incredibly paranoid about copyright. I
mail post dated masters to myself of all my good stuf. If I
successfully made a whole symphony I'd be sure to do it for
that too...

thing?

You want a score attached right? Correct me if I'm wrong,
but I thought you were really good at music, and studied
theory and all of that? Surely a real musician would be able
to follow along fine without a score...?!?

hmmm scored a lot of stuff a few years ago when i was
writing brass ensembles maybe i could do something with all
that

C'mon - I'm sure EVERY musician wants to write a symphony!!
It's just about the ultimate in the intellectual pursuit in
music! I've never written a symphony, no - I have written
three piano sonatas, an opus of waltzes, a musical, and
various other piano pieces tho... I'm studying the
instruments of the orchestra right now for texture and tone
&tc. i've always wanted to write a symphony :)

come on chris, give him a fucking break will ya!
I might do this paul, I'm not sure yet. I'll study some of
my parent's symphony albums but I don't know if this is
gonna work for me.

symphony's are overrated... I want to hear some fugues
dammit, or maybe even a couple minuets!!! :)

well i'd do it, except that:

1. i cant read music, and i dont make music in traditional
notation programs
2. i dont have any 'real' sounding strings/etc..

i tried something classical sounding with midi like 3 years
ago, but it sucked..

could we do a 'symphony' with electronic sounds?

something :) (that is; if you still know what you said here
at that time :D)
at this moment i only have acces to my piano in the weekends
:\ and that's when i want to do so many other things..

Well Funk_master, smart as you're trying to be -- symphonies
can include both Fugues and minuets.

To rF, a symphony doesn't have to utilise traditional
instruments :) You don't have to try and construct a
"classical" sounding symphony!
