idm elements in other music

we've all heard the terrible, often mainstream acts that
have in some way co-opted “intelligent” electronic
elements into other styles of music. usually it doesn’t
work. are there any good bands/artists that successfully
combine electronic music with rock or with hip hop, jazz,
etc..

some that i can think of that i enjoy:
prefuse73, radiohead, nightmares on wax, american head
charge (kinda), Amon Tobin, etc..
sorry if this has been discussed before.,.

Dido.
Her album "No Angel" is excellent.

if you ask me, it's usually "idm" taking elements from other
genres of music, and using them.

but then again, i can never tell what exactly is
'idm' and what's not.

agree with you about it taking from other styles of music,
and i also don't know makes an “idm artist” exactly
either, i was going to just put electronic instead of idm,
but that would include much electronic music that i didn't
intend to include.
i'll rephrase:
who are some artists who’s music is more or less
traditionally based, but also utilize electronics and like
to push the boundaries and experiment, making their genre
difficult to classify?

BT's production for n'sync ("pop") and britney spears ("i
run away") comes to mind for sure. a LOT of dance/teen pop
actually, which i'm sure is a kick in the balls to a lot of
you. what can i say, "idm elements" (insert snickering from
career "idm" musicians) sounds cool and is actually pretty
damn easy to listen to. now, the day ambient, noise, or
breakcore starts making it into TRL songs will be quite
interesting (not that it will happen).

i've lost a lot of respect for bt just now learning that he
was a part of that awful song. not that i really enjoyed his
music to begin with.. well i heard one song that was decent
because it had m. doughty on it.

are there any good ones though?

"pop" and "i run away" are pretty well done, i just choose
not to listen to them. but to answer your question further,
just pick one. if we're sticking to POP--million+ album
selling disposable dance pop music--then almost all of it is
idm influenced. the musicians who make the "backing" tracks
obviously listen to it and they know it suits the songs they
are paid to make. "good" is subjective. most of it is
pointless/meaningless so you prolly won't enjoy any of it,
no matter how well done.

as for idm influence in rock... see topic from a week ago.

i liked m.doughty in his original setting though

m. doughty is great. i love the beautiful and bizzare images
he creates with his words.

also, titsworth, i don't really mean pop music. i mean music
in general that wouldn't really be considered electronic
music, but borrows some elements from it to make something
interesting and in your opinion, good.

doughty's stuff w/ soul coughing and his song w/ bt
(actually there are several, but only one has been released)
are so dope. i'm an oldskool SC fan. his solo acoustic stuff
could be a lot better tho. i only really like the mary j.
blige cover.

prefuse 73 successful?!?!

you dont have to add idm elements to be experimental and
push boundarys, look at bentley rhythm ace....

Oh and I'd say Air is pop with "IDM" influence.

I would say ...And justice for all by Metallica. Electronize
the rythms, melodies and harmonies and you've got yourself
an great, I hate the term, IDM album.

i think charlie clouser from NIN did a pretty good job of
integrating electronica into their music....too bad he's no
longer with them.....

..like the remix to "Judith" by APC.

i don't like "genre spotting"
but sometimes you have to use the terms to be understood by
other people.
