eh that came off meaner than i intended. coil are fundamentally a duo, with a revolving cast of collaborators. john balance (aka jhon balance... *cough*) often does spoken word and singing during their tracks, it's not to everyone's liking but a lot of us enjoy it. as you might've guessed after seeing them 5 minutes john has a bit of a drinking problem. still.

im sorry to say this, knowing some of you like coil and all, but they DEFINITELY hit their zenith like over ten years ago... i bought mtpitd 1 AND 2 (didnt learn my lesson after the first one) and i sold them in a week or so. the equinox/solstice collection ALSO let me down big time... their outpuit in general has always been a 50/50 affair. i think their highlights are:
* black light district (wasnt this supposed to be part one of a series? so much for "jhon"s big concepts)
* worship the glitch (even though, it sounds a bit dated by now, halliwell hammers is still good)
*20' to 2000 (the best 20 minutes they have written in about 8 years)
*love's secret domain (not all of it. just the denser stuff i can get my teeth into. stuff like the snow just detracts from the overall flow, for me)

your opinion is about as authoratative as someone saying afx hit his stride w/ the rdj album, nin w/ the downward spiral, autechre w/ lp5, etc.. people like different stuff, and some of us coil fans like all of their many types of music.

no i believe my point is that people have a right to like whatever they want and that just cos one person says they passed their prime doesn't make it so. correct me if i'm wrong but unlike you i've never said anything was better or worse or that any artist has lost it.

i just find it so obnoxious when people piss all over music others enjoy A LOT. there are a lot better ways of critiquing something than to make obviously subjective blanket statements that serve no real purpose except for putting down others for enjoying what you term to be an inferior piece of art.

my point is you don't have to put something down to praise the qualities of something else... this is a problem i have with a lot of the users on this board (especially all the old Album A vs. Album B and Artist C vs. Artist D threads). call it babying if you want but constantly saying something is crap really has negative effects on people. it's not a context an album needs.

sorry. in MY OPINION, the new stuff IS garbage. it just IS. the lyrics are trite, bad pagan references mixed with drug babble. sorry, that's how i feel. it's a veri immature way of going about things. it's very highschool kinda "shrooms rule!" written on the back of a notebook kinda poetry. sorry. the music itself is ok... but balance has GOT to learn to shut his trap for 5 seconds.
they lost their mystery.

"bad pagan references mixed with drug babble."
Yes, that's why I walked out. He was just talking about drugs and not being funny about it. It seemed to be along similair lines as comedians who swear constantly, (some) people find it funny because of the subject matter, regardless of the fact no actual "jokes" are made.
I'm not writing Coil off as rubbish, perhaps I happened to walk in during their absolute worst track. It doesn't make me want to go out of my way to hear any of their other stuff though.

well, that why i recommmended the stuff i did... it's mostly instrumental and quite good. blacklight is VERY minimal and droney... hardly any voice on it at all, and where there is, it is good. glitch is also very spacey and meditative.

Ceri JC - You obviously didn't give Coil much of a chance. Balance spoke about drugs for about one minute, conversing with the audience between tracks. He said he wasn't drunk, somebody shouted "liar", he then said he wasn't lying, but he did have horse tranquilisers for later on, and a horse in his chalet to give them to. I'd hardly call that going on and on about drugs and pagan babble.
For the record, Coil were one of the highlights of the weekend for an awful lot of people.

And why would you have ever been listening to Coil in the first place? Aren't they diametrically opposed to just about everything you believe in? Blatant Crowley references, Austin Osman Spare praxis, alchemy, Jon Dee monads, blood letting, homosexuality, Pan worship, animalism, paganism, telepathy, ect. the list goes on for quite a while.

Here's the gist of Coil. Their most notable early release, How to Destroy Angels, is a collection of "dark ambient" works. It's awesome.
Then there was Scatology, industrial stuff featuring Marc Almond from Soft Cell. Some of the tracks are definitely prototype industrial sounding.
after that, you've got Horse Rotorvator, which is a greater experiment in sounds and blending styles. It sounds like industrial beatles in their worst moods.
Then, there's Love's Secret Domain. A beat oriented collection. Not really my thing because it's just not as exciting. They then did some remix records of HR and LSD. After this, they made some records that don't get much attention...
they go back to the more experimental side of things. And then Music to Play in the Dark--which is phenomenal in its creepiness and somber tone.
Recently, they've been back into sound and ambient bits. And playing live a hell of a lot more than ever.

ehhehe Cabbog you did NOT introduce me to Coil......so *sticks tongue out* poo on YOU! you have however introduced me to Love, Ingown Ring, etc. etc. etc... 'as the king and i said'
ceri......dunno about Coil /aka John Balance now but the two CD's i have are kicking, liked them on the first listen. some people DO SUCK LIVE tho, so perhaps you just didn't see him at his best?
tibbar...i don't keep up with people drug habits, as it doesn't affect me, i can and often does influence music artists for the worse (some say for the better) but either way i know what i like, and i'm enjoying the music on that level.
on a side note, something i've noticed since you've wandered onto the MB, and take it or leave it......you are WAY WAY over sensative to criticism from people who in no way REALLY affect your life, only as much as you let them. you seem to have a 'cry baby' attitude thats unusual for a guy your age. read what you write, it's defensive and overly dramatic......leave the drama at the door it makes the MB a more interesting place IMO.
machine.....check out strangefortune.com for good prices, i'd EMAIL the dood before ordering cos my stuff WHICH HE CHARGED ME FOR, has been on backorder for 3 months.....=/
my 2 cents as per usual!
