How do you describe Idm/Electronica to a friend? I find it really hard to describe.

First of all I don't call it Intelligent Dance Music. That makes me think of nerds having spasms. Which is actually what it is if you think about it.
I don't try to describe it. I put on a CD and let people find out for themselves that they don't like it.

~@#&*+*/*#§\!=,±`... it's too varied to have a fully satisfying description i think.
i could describe autechre, squarepusher, venetian snares, individually... but not really idm (and, in fact, not even aphex twin).
maybe, generally undanceable electronic music?

I would say it sounds like manic depressive robots jolting their pleasure centers with electrical cables, and sometimes they play videos of children's shows to remind themselves of what the world was like when there were humans alive.

Fact is you can't properly describe music with words alone, you need to hear it.

electronic music with an experimental element, often non-repetitive....err.....that was about it for today I think
