I've just purchased Royksopp, melody A.M., mainly because when I bought the massive attack album I got it for half-price. I am pleasantly surprised with it, although over half the tracks seem overly familiar. Just how many of their tracks have they licensed out to adverts, and, if so, is their album not just the new "play"? In which case it can get to fuck.

i listened to it in my mates car and found it be good at first, but after about 3 tracks it was just the same over and over again. i found that all the songs were a bit too slow. i mean maybe its supposed to be a chillout album, but it didnt seem chilled enough to warrant no medium tempo/fast tracks imo. the new play? hmm not quite, but its on telly quite a lot, which is a bit annoying. why not ae,afx, etc. ch4 has lots of afx on its higher-brow documentaries....anyway, i digress.

I was kind of pleasantly surprised as well. Although it would be different for me, I heard it when it was originally released about 2 years ago. The early tracks are nice enough, but the 2nd half of the last track "Come", is one of the best pieces of ambient I've ever heard.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good album. I've just got reservations about artists whoring themselves by selling their songs to advertise fucking telephone companies or whatever.

I think it's weird that artists like Moby and Royksopp get shit for putting their music on ads...i mean, there's no other way (unless you're a pop band) that you'll get heard..or something.

My favourite advert tune at the mo is Gay Dad's 'Joy' in that car advert. To me, it exemplifies that feeling of free spiritedness and reckless abandon one gets when purchasing a new car.

Ah, Gay Dad. Darlings of the NME. Journalist should never try and become pop stars. Their outrageously politically correct name never really caught on. Although it courted them some publicity, hardly any young men had the bottle to go up to the checkout and ask for the new Gay Dad album.

As for Royksopp... hmmm doesn't do it for me. Far too "nice" but it did make me want to buy a new mobile phone

my girlfriend took me to the royksopp show last night... i hadn't heard the whole album, just pieces.
anyway, it was the closest to a god-rock event i've ever seen for an 'electronic' performance. i don't know if it's because it was sponsored by the radio or what. they shouted thank you after every song.
lots of prerecorded shit on there, even thought they were 'performing' live- with drum pads, a bass guitar, and keyboards. does anyone know if acts typically use a technique where something is played live and then is sampled real-time to keep looping? they may have been doing some of that.
some good grooves, but i think it's to the point where if you're going to see an act you know well, the crowd's gonna be pretty dull, becuase they want to SEE something instead of hearing it.
they do have this track though where they lower the pitch without slowing the speed (i know this is a common effect, but i'm not sure i've heard it used in such an obvious part of the melody- it's a repetitive sample). it has a strange effect on your ears because your instinct is that it's slowing down while in fact the beat stays constant. kind of like freefalling where your body thinks it's standing, but it's not...or some of those optical illusions with the parrallel lines that appear skewed anyway, that was my favorite part of the night.
