I never knew Aphex couldn't play the keyboard.

I've just read the article on the Warp website about the
piano tracks on Druqks....I never knew he couldn't actually
play keyboard at all! I'm kinda amazed I guess...I always
thought he played his tunes...

Oh, and about the piano tracks-I find them very amazing now
I've found out he can't actually read music or play an
instrument, but they are still fairly underdeveloped imho. I
think he's best at doing tracks like Cock/Ver 10 or
whatever. :D

aphex has composed many of the greates melodies of the
nineties...so he is a music composer, and one of the best...
how couldnt he read music

I can't read music and still compose melodies. Shite
melodies at the moment like but y'know..

Yeah, reading notes is fairly easy i found out after
starting on the piano myself!

It would be strange if he couldnt figure it out...

I just bite the keyboard, sounds more organic. Actually I
just twat it with a hammer and call it Glitch when my
computer starts to fuck up. I heard a glitch remix of an
Eiffel65 track last night, my computer generated it when
sonique crashed. I almost came it was that good.

I mean...it takes 30 minutes to know which is every note on
the pentagram and which is the lengh of each note... no big
deal.... the hard thing is to have the ability of playing
and composing music...and well...

anyone with fingers can play a keyboard--so he might not be
able to get out blank sheet music and write the score...big
deal, this isn't the 19th century, it's really not that
impressive.

Well, if he can't read music, big deal....but he can't play
the keyboard! That's what that article says!

Its like some/most proffesional guitar players can't read
musical notation, yet they can play (what some people
consider) exellent solos ect.
Fuck,Mozart was deaf!
It helps to read music, but its obviously not
compulsery(incorrect spelling?).

Keyboard? I think that article is misleading.

So, according to that article, if we were to visit mr twin
in his studio, there would be NO keyboards? Since, of
course, he cannot play them... nahhh

he can play-but lets say he heard a certain song-do you
think he could play that tune on keyboard?

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2003-02-19 09:43 [#00561426]

ok..maybe it's wrong...I too find it impossible to believe
he can't play at all...maybe it's all samples of
tunes...or...er..I dunno!

you mean the ability to play by ear? Well, not that many
people have that ability in the first place. Mozart once
heard Allegre's Miserere at the Vatican, went home, and
wrote out the entire score from memory...now THAT is genius.
I can pick up tunes on the piano and play along, which is
nice.

i dont think playing by ear is that difficult for musicians
who can read music notes
at least from my experience
and i suspect- that mozart tune was longer than 3 minutes :)

The miserere is a long choral piece, very very beautiful.
And experience helps a person in playing by ear
too--learning compositional techniques etceteras---chord
changes and all that bollocks

Saint John and Saint Paul couldn't read or write music back
in their Beatle days (and Paul probably still can't), and
they got by pretty well.

I think he writes his own patches in Max/MSP and
Supercollider that send out midi notes to his gear. I've
been getting into this for a little while now. You just have
to figure out which objects are used to control what. He may
of been doing it this way for many years. Besides that, I
bet he can at least play even if he can't read music.

he has to be able to play the keyboard to produce any kind
of melody... otherwise all his music would be drums

is being able to make it sound good

All you need is an ear for what sounds good. This is not
shown however by the track 'Father'.

think that his later music sounds like like what I said
above. If you know those progs well, you could sound just
about any way you wanted.

i think the article is implying that he can't read music,
not that he can't play notes on a keyboard.
i have no idea how to play the piano but once, by accident,
pounded out a pretty close rendition to Gymnopodie No.1.
not to say that usually would happen, but i don't think you
have to be able to read or write music to be able to compose
it, and aphex is definitely a great melodic composer.

rdj not being able to read notation is bogus. 4 year olds
can learn notation. rdj says he's never read a fictional
book but lots of manuals and such. i'm sure he's opened up
some basic music theory books.

EVEN i learned reading basic notes before i was 10 and FOR
FUCKS SAKE i haven't even really studied them. poor rich
must be dum as a boot if he can't read notation (j/k)

but reading software, that is cool. i have a friend who made
a track without hearing it at all, just visually. he
imagined what thisandthat would sound like and did it.. it
is not a bad track at all.

I think Richard sees himself as an experimental artist -
experimental artists probably feel compromised by using
music standards which are hundreds of years old.
He probably dismisses music notation publicly, because it
fits in with his general attitude of irreverance, and,
because he genuinely believes its obsolete.
I would think most of the electronic melodies composed today
are the result of software-based sound collage as opposed to
recorded keyboard riffs.

my 2 cents: i DO know this... he obviously cant play very
well, since he used a yamaha digital piano to write the
stuff on drukqs. it operates kinda like a player piano, and
he prepared the strings inside... i dont know if that means
he cant play AT ALL or not... it obviously means he can't
play all that well.
