I am fond of the squarepusher peices. There are more then I knew about, once I went looking through all his songs...
Selection 16 and Maximum preist have some. They arent anything like AMAZING. but they are just nice dark ambient for background listening (hey, isnt that was ambient is all about!?!?!) (ok not really, I like to concentrate on ambient music, but its also good as background music)
also, and excuse me for spamming, its been awhile...
but I got 2 dark ambient peices up at My Zebox Page
one of them is a remix, and the other is an original
enjoy!

Aux Petits Enfants de France by Les Joyaux de la Princesse
I always recommend that album when people ask for "dark ambient" I also like Lustmord and older Delerium.

try stars of the lid.. some of their stuff can be very bleak especially the first disc of 'the tired sounds of stars of the lid'
'avec laudenum' can be too at times
also check out brian eno's 'apollo' and 'on land' ..they're both rather moody
from the bits i've heard of the donnie darko soundtrack it sounds like it'd be up your alley as well
and as mentioned several times before, lustmord makes very dark ambient stuff
oh, and you should also look into phoenecia's 'brownout' ..theres beats, so its not completely ambient..but its very dark and atmospheric

i enjoy the soundscapes of that Plotik album you suggested, then i wanted more and i stumbled upon a blog full of 'dark electronics', and i gave a look at the cover arts. it's strange when you like some music but you don't like the images that the authors wants to evoke. i can't say i find myself in a surgery room listen to this kind of sounds, nor in company of a dismembered corpse.

dunno, that Plotkin guy has a death-metal background - and yes i agree, this whole sinisterness thing is very cheesy...
if you like the sound of this person though and don't mind distorted guitars, i'd recommend you this which is not ambient, but good, and also this which too is decent, however pretty harsh.
