NO MORE WIN BUGS

(copy of a post on wattm)
I wrote about my method of reinstalling Windows (not only
Windows).

---
formatting is for llamas!

use Norton Ghost suckers!

The ABSOLUTE way:

make 3 partitions:

1. small NTFS - about 3 or 4 GBs - system partition (OS,
swap, essential soft like Winamp)
2. big NTFS - all the rest - data partition (music, progs,
all your stuff)
3. small FAT32 - size equal or slightly less than pt.1 -
archive partition, ghost.exe and imagefile

-install a perfect clean unbuggy OS (I prefer WinXP SP1) on
1st partition
-use Ghost to grab the image of 1st partition and place it
on 3rd.
-whenever you get tired of system getting dirty, boot to
command prompt and launch Ghost. Replace your 1st partition
with the one stored in the imagefile.

whoppee!!! an easy new birth in about 10 minutes

The archive partition can be smaller, as Ghost uses highly
efficient compression, but I don't know the average ratio on
compressing WinXP, so I use "equal to source" size.

it's beautiful !

this is for all systems (even dos)...The Ghost program makes
a compressed backup of your harddrive. So when computers
shitty, and you need to format, you just have to run
ghost.exe from the command-promt, and the system "reloads"

but surely you would lose most file associations, which
could be a good thing i suppose, but you would have to set
it all up again, e.g. mp3 open in winamp, not mediaplayer.
why not buy and extra old cd rom drive and just boot windows
from cd each time?:) i still say use linux though.

"and win xp sucks. " yes. it is a colouring book os. it lets
more idiots try and fail to use computers. just by using
colourful buttons, you cannot make it easy. most people get
confused when they get a windows error still, even though
they now get to email bill about it :)

0. Yes it is just a tip

1. WinXP design sucks, I turned it off. It is much
more stable than 9x line (like 2000), and more
flexible/compatible than NT/2000.

2. You don't lose any associations, you don't lose any
programs you install on drive C, the restored system is a
perfect replica of what it was when you backed it up.

3. You can use it for ANY OS, Win9x Win2k WinXP Linux DOS
UNIX etc, whatever filesystem it has, it's supported

And the attempts of MS operating systems at becoming user's
nanny are really shit. They could at least remove that in
Pro version... "You're an experienced administrator, so
please listen while we explain what 'double-clicking' means,
then we'll give you another try at changing this user's
settings"

Sounds verrrry good.... but I take it you need to start from
scratch? I have 2500 files which I don't fancy burning and
then putting back on

I know a lot of systems like to keep the swap on a different
disk altogether for increased speed. Still, your system
sounds very good. I'll be re-partitoning and re-building my
machine over the summer.

Skyfarmer: Yes I find the patronsing comments in XP Pro
annoying. If people don't know what search files means they
shouldn't be using "Pro"!
