I mastered Draft 7.30 for us all

I've got a grands worth of mastering software. I figured I
might as well put it to good use. It'll be up on Soulseek
soon as it's back online. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to
give my username or not. If I am I will, if not it should
still be obvious. Essentially what I did was eliminate as
much tape hiss as possible while still retaining a good
amount of the high end by dropping everything above 8200
khz during the noiser parts and 6500 khz durinng the
quieter. I normalized sides A and B as individual pieces (i
dwnld Draft 7.30 as two files A and B). I did my best
guessing as to the start and end points of indiviual tracks.
I believe I'm in the ballpark as I came up with ten tracks
and the official album listing features ten tracks (wipes
brow, I didn't have internet access when I was working on
this and forgot to note how many tracks were on the album).
I then automated the eq as noted above on each individual
track and ultra-maximized the f*ck out of it. Did them all
this way in this way then: bounced 'em to disk, burned them,
ripped them and wholla here we are. Now instead of having
to turn up your speakers to 11 to hear the album it should
rock pretty nicely at 6, if you know what I'm saying. It
definately loses some up the higher end intricacies when
eliminating that pesky tape hiss, so you'll absolutely want
to obtain the official release to hear all that good stuff.
Hope everyone enjoys.

I never had any problems with Brisk's rip.. had normal
volumes..

i'm sure some are just fine. the only version i was
successfully able to download came right from the tape and
sounded terrible. real hissy, really quiet and only two
tracks to boot. i was gonna tweak it for myself regardless,
figured i might as well share.

I initially uploaded the sides A/B MP3's which were what I
downloaded from newsnet (well, I added the ID tags, and also
changed the filename, but it was basically the same). It
wasn't perfect in that it did have the obligatory tape hiss,
and it was slightly quieter than I would have liked.

I went to work on the editing using Soundforge 6. I firstly
merged the two MP3 files into the single .wav file, then
increased the volume slightly (normal levels, and no
clipping). I have the noise reduction filter (from the
plugin suite) and reduced the hiss to none existant levels.
I also applied the sharpen filter to gain more on the high
frequencies.

I then cut it up into the correct tracklisting. Obviously we
don't have the correct times for each track yet, but i'm
pretty sure I got it right (most tracks actually have a gap,
with only 2 or 3 that are seemless).

I've shared these files with quite a few people on soulseek
now, and I also put the .wav's onto a CDR to listen to,
preserving my original tape. I'd still be quite interested
in hearing your files though, since i'm no professional
masterer :>

absolutely...and it pisses off the artists too...to some
extent

it's a valid point if you have no intention of buying the
album. seeing as i do, i've no problem with it. since i
also have every autechre release that is available on vinyl
and cd, i don't think they would have a problem with it
either (they've earned my bucks) mastering wise, what i did
wasn't that complicated. if i really wanted to do a
professional job on it, i would need to spend hours with
each track. i spent about two hours on the whole thing and
most of that time was waiting for bounces and normalizes to
process. basically, this is absolutely no substitute for
the real thing and you all should buy the album if you like
it. consequently, i just put it up on kazaa.

and mp3s are very low quality... you do not actually get the
full quality until the cd is released.

what herbwest is doing is very wrong. i am not passing
judgements. i _personally_ think it is artistic theft.

what i dont understand is why they officially announce the
release of an album more than 4 MONTHS EARLY!!!!!

why not keep it on a low-profile and not distrubute promos
in advance?

but i still didnt give in to the temptation...

there are still many people who merely "collect" these
albums

i know it is a different case for people like me and you,
but for the masses i do not think it should be availible for
them to download.

i ll be buying the album too....but i do believe that untill
its released its not really our property...then again i do
think its important to be able to listen to an album before
you buy it....and most shops in england for example dont
have listening posts

as an artist myself, it doesn't piss me off. in this day
and age with technology the way it is we HAVE to expect our
work to be shared, remixed, remastered, chopped up and spit
out. i would only have a problem if people were somehow
making money off of it. also, i am not so presumptious as
to assume every single person who downloaded my work would
otherwise have bought it. that is ridiculous thinking
Metallica. i understand that not everyone can afford to buy
everything they want. i know i can't. i would rather
someone hear it for free then not hear it at all.

if you all really think it wrong, i can take it out of my
soulseek folder. the server is down so no one has heard it.
it just seems to me that if someone is going to download
the album regardless, they may as well download a decent
sounding one. consensus?

this is fascinating to me. it didn't dawn on me for a
second that anyone would be bothered. very interesting.

i know wht you mean..in this day and age its just annoying
when people DO make money out of it..a friend of mine sells
quite a lot of records.hes quite poor, but could be living
off all the bootlegs of his albums sold in south america
alone.
the metalica attitude sucks i agree with you on that
one..
and as an artist myself( we fucking all are) the more
people hear my stuff the more im happy...so thats one point
to you then

Artists put out a promo to garner publicity for their album
(reviews, advance airplay, etc).

I think it worked beyond their expectations. Will it
increase record sales? Probably...

i'll certainly remove it from my slsk folder if you all
think i should. i really just did it for me 'cause i'm not
listening to no poop-star recording when i have the tools to
fix it.

none of us are adolf hitler...

i only think it's a bit much to re-master an unreleased
album for distrubution cross the 'net -- thats only my
opinion and nothing more. "they" may have concerns over it
or they may not.

it's up to you really. it's glad to know that there are
hardcore ae fans out there!!

good lord, i like it. definately more melodies flowing
throughout than on Confield. compares favorably to the
third track on Gantz Graf and third on Confield. sweet and
crunchy.

don't just "fuck this" Phobiazero - i really want to know if
people think it is wrong to remaster tracks released or
unreleased. i do it all the time with vinyl when i tranfer
it to cd. this is the first time i've ever put any of these
remasterings online though. i never considered it an issue
until now.

i think i'll just keep to myself or at least not label it as
though it has been reworked. what's the story with this
tape anyhow? where or whom did it come from?

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-02-04 14:20 [#00540961]

Here's what I think:
If you want to listen to it ahead of time, there's no harm
in that. If you don't like it, just delete it. But as far
as previews... I'd say a fair quality two-track CD-R is
probably the best. My CD-R is two tracks of decent quality.
It helps me get a feel for the album, I know what to expect
from Draft: sounds good. :)
And I think AE are probably proud to be spread around. So
much junk like Oakenfold gets tossed around and played more
often to people who are going to be open minded to
electronic music. There must be a sense of accomplishment
to them, you know? I'm sure it's possible they think poorly
of those who helped spread it, but since I'm certain it will
increase sales, I'd wager they'll be fine with it. I mean,
all us dorks can boast and spread word of mouth about how
great it is, thus increasing the demand to hear it.

they need to annouce it early to get hype going so people
will actually buy the albumn.. i don't think promos should
have been leaked this early... i for one haven't heard a
note of it and i won't untill the day it comes out..
