Just out of curiosity, who among you is a smart, beautiful,
Tori fan? Who has four fun cats and a winning sense of
humor? That's what I wanna know! :D

i thought tori amos fans were all really geeky teenage girls
that constantly need to proclaim that they are bi-sexual.

these girls like beads and lisa loeb glasses. they also
think they are artistic.

better than any other women vocalist out there? you're
kidding, right?

i love tori and i think she's one of the best female
vocalists to ever be mainstream but there are thousands more
talented and more emotionally powerful singers than her, and
she'll be the first to admit who she admires vocally.

i somehow feel this thread was meant for ONE person, i'm not
sure why you feel the need to proclaim it on a public

you do realize there are great female singers who aren't
popular, right? like, you know, laurie anderson, diamanda
glass, that sort of thing?

well, perhaps i should have replaced "popular" with
"commercially viable." anyway, it's a bit of a laugh to put
tori, as much as i love her, up there with some of the great
talents in vocal music (think opera, think jazz, think "art
music").

Hmm. I happen to really like Tori Amos and I'm no teenager.
She's sassy, er, sexy? and um mad? well I like her anyway. I
also like
Laurie Anderson
Kristin Hersh
Jane Siberry - GET WITH IT! SHE'S GREAT! WAKE UP!!
Bjork
Peej

but I also like Kate Bush a lot too.

And I dug out my Rosie Vela CD the other day too and thought
'despite horrible over-production theres some really great
songs there!'

What does that make me?

I have one cat and an odd sense of humour which no-one
bloody understands!!

jane sibbery is great. what're your favorite songs by her?
the one on the crow soundtrack is dope. kate bush also has a
great voice. pj harvey and bjork are also truly talented
"alternative" vocalists. i'd put tori and beth gibbons right
up there too. i'm just sayin' it's pretty funny when girls
act like their favorite pop singer is the best in the world
just cos they like 'er, oblivious to a whole world of more
talented and innovative vocal performers.

It's very hard to decide on favourite Sibs. My favourite
album is probably her debut, or the Walking. Or When I Was a

In the Blue Light, Grace Hospital from Lips out of the NY
Trilogy box, the Gospel According to Darkness.. oh dear
there's just too many to list. I love everything. I have
everything as far as I know, and I love it all :)

Kristin Hersh is better in that respect because she is still

You know, I think the arrogance is unneeded and undesired.
A lot of people on this board seem to think their tastes are
better than others', which is not the case at all. Not
everyone is going to like everything; no two people's tastes
overlap. I just don't understand the need for such wanton
pompousness--what makes anyone think that a person who likes
Tori Amos as a favorite musician somehow has a skewed or
conspicuously biased opinion of all musical things?

Contrary to your wrong judgments of me, I am not oblivious
to a world of better singers--its just that Tori happens to
be my favorite. When I have a favorite, I usually stick with
it, and Tori has been my favorite female singer for a long
time. Just let it be.

And by the way, I do not like Diamanda Galas. Her piano
playing is good, but I cant get into her voice. :|

only girl to post in this thread. i'm glad you're not
oblivious to the fact that there are a lot of really
interesting singers out there and not every talented singer
is in the pop field.

but i agree with neetta.. tori's kinda the marilyn manson or
korn for the female sex. that doesn't stop me from listening
to her anyway.

Yah, I can see how people would like her--shes very
passionate and her voice is full of so many raw emotions...
I just cant get into it (her voice, that is). It kind of
irritates me. I feel those same emotions from Tori or the
Cure or Bauhaus.

Do you have any suggestions to a Diamanda song that I might
like? :) (Ive heard some and deleted them all from my
computer and no longer recall the names.)

I assumed you were talking to me seeing as you had that
whole thread a little while ago in which you essentially
discredited any knowledge that I had and indirectly called
me narrow minded. :)

Because I dont like hip hop...

because so many girls latch onto her music and lyrics before
or without really understanding it. they catch a vibe
(depression, introspection, redemption, self-assuredness,
vengeance/defiance) and think it's the greatest thing since
sliced bread, or for short, that
tori/manson/korn/nin/britney/eminem/etc. "really understand
them." there's a lot of raw talent in tori's music and
lyrics, it's just neglected by most of her fans until they
grow older and get past their childhood biases and limited
experience. hate me now; that's how i feel on the subject.

I disagree. With Korn and (several, but not all) Marilyn
Manson tracks, the lyrics are meaningless drivel. There's
nothing there to connect with. Sure, Korn's great for
cheesy acronyms, and Marilyn Manson can say something that
the MTV crowd will find shocking or obscene, but there's
nothing there as far as a message goes. No message to
interpret in the first place! In the parallel you've drawn,
you imply there's something to be understood about
Korn/Manson. See? And which childhood biases and limited
experience are you referring to? Don't you think Tori
writes songs that are easy for people to connect with
because they have meaning? Isn't it logical that me and a
gun is going to strike a chord with anyone? not just rape
victims. Is there anyone who hasn't had the emotions if not
the experiences in her songs? They're personal wheras
Masnon and Korn have very insincere, impersonal lyrics.

But if you mean to say that young teenagers get into
somehting that they don't understand and like it, that's
somehow wrong? Besides, music is about this "vibe," isn't
it? Isn't that the point? Isn't that why we listen to this
vocalless nonsense? because ultimately listening to Aphex
causes us to catch a certain vibe. None of us will
understand what his tracks mean; it's completely subjective,
but the vibe is what counts in this! So it's ridiculous to
go on thinking that just because a person likes a certain
"mainstream" musician, that they can't appreciate the vibe,
right?

i wouldn't say korn and manson's lyrics are meaningless,
there're some sentiments mixed in there, but it comes off
very contrived and pretentious. so do many of tori's lyrics
to her young and naive listeners who just wants someone to
look up to. i'm not saying tori's lyrics are shit; they're
great, and a lot better written than korn's, manson's, or
even nin's. it goes in that radiohead category of great but
a little immature, like it's just meant to apply to teenage
squabbles and nights alone sulking in bedrooms. few of her
songs seem to really transcend that niche, though i doubt
it's intentional.

as for "me and a gun", what makes that song any more
powerful than "daddy" by korn? (this brings me back..
haven't listened to any korn in 5 years). i mean korn's
singer was molested and possibly raped while young also,
does that not add any legitimacy to his lyrics?

i never said there's anything "wrong" about teenagers
latching onto a musician for comfort and security. we've all
done it i'm sure. i'm just pointing out that it happens. and
for the record it was afxNUMB who said tori's the best
female vocalist out there, not your girlfriend. you may have
started this thread as a private note to her but it's
morphed into a tori discussion since then.

I like Tori Amos. A lot. Hell, I will go as far as to say
that she is my favorite female vocalist/musician/lyricist to
date. I have liked her for as long as I can remember, and
really got into her when I was fourteen or fifteen. Now I
have grown and matured, and I feel that my tastes have
matured as well--but no matter what, I will always like Tori
Amos. I feel that she will always be my favorite female
singer.

And no one else has to feel that way. Those are just my
feelings. No matter what anyone says, I will still feel this
way.

Theres no need for petty pretentiousness here, in my
opinion. No one is better than anyone else just because he
or she happens to like a certain type of music--or every
type of music.

Lets just show a little more respect for other peoples
tastes, okay?
