Well, I finally got SAWII the other day, and I have to say that it's....all right.
It's a good album to sleep to and to read books by etc, but I'm really doubting that this album is all it's cracked up to me. I just hope that eventually it will grow on me, but for now it's very hard to digest.
:(

I bought the CD on the day it was released and hated it. Didn't listen to it for months, then one day I just had the urge to put it on and from that point forth I have loved it.
I think the problem is that it is nothing like you expect. No matter what you were expecting SAWII was nothing like it, but that is a sign of how much of a classic it is. :)

Dont listen to the album in the sense where your directly concentrating on the music. Go outside for gods sake and watch it become part of the environment.
Good ambie should be listened to activlely and passsively. Its quite a trip to be in the middle of a bustling city with some SawII in your ears.

I think the major problem is that this record in hyped out to the max on this board. I love SAW2 but I prefer SAW1 but I think you have to make your very own and personal ambient expieriences to get into it. You cant compare this to the actual IDM records, which are probably obvious entertaining but not as DEEEEP as SAW2

i think as much as pushing ppl into drugs is really wrong and stuff
it really does help if you listen to it stoned or on some sort of hallucinogen
u have to be in the right frame of mine too, i havent been in that frame of mind for months
but when you enjoy it, you don't just hear it, the album really envelops you :)

SAWII is old tho...nearly 10 yrs now so you can't expect it to sound as "new" nowadays; a million others have picked up AFXs sound so it's not gonna sound as original as it once was...

saw2 is great for sleeping2 or reading2 or fucking2 but it is most moving for me when i'm in a busy frantic atmosphere, so long as it's all i can hear. it has a fantastic way of making you feel disjointed from your surroundings while remaining in them, and maintaining a sharp alertness of what is all around you at once.....it kind of makes me feel like i'm watching a movie or dreaming....it heightens a sense of perfect order and fluidity in seemingly chaotic hustle and bustle of city life. i put it in while i was working one day (in the kitchen of a busy restaurant) and it was fucking perfect...literally made me feel a high of sorts...does this make any sense or do i sound like a hippie or something?

I'll have to try all these methods...
I've been playing it quietly in the background while reading the new book "Abarat" by Clive Barker. They seem to work perfectly together.

yeah.. . the over hype was the biggest problem.. . brought it one trip and it was supposed to be the highlight of the score of cds I brought.. . but Im finding like most aphex twin.. . that with time I have trouble even mustering the interest to listen to it.. . so much better music out there.. . and unfortunately for the few aphex twins albums I own I have a lot of brilliant music. ..
if your after quite possibly the best ambient music ever get Biosphere's "Substrata" thats one album I dont think can be overhyped. ..

What about that one track that goes like this: "Sail away, sail away, sail away!... Sail away, sail away, sail away!... Sail away, sail away, sail away!... Sail away, sail away, sail away!... I didn't let my sister ever see my poo... I didn't let my sister ever see my poo... I didn't let my sister ever see my poo... I didn't let my sister ever see my poo..."
That song is kinda like SAW II, right guys?

I love how dark some of the tracks are, some serious RAW emotion. But yea the most darkest metal/screamo shit that comes out these days cant even be compared to tracks like Tassels or Matchsticks.

One of my favourite albums from Richard. Absolutely blew me away when I first bought it and whilst I haven't listened to it for a while I still hold this in highest regard of ambient. Made me realise just how powerfull negative spaces can be in ambient music. (IMO)

When i sleep i don't leave music on as it's a bit silly really (I can't find the 'Omelette du Fromage' episode of Dexter's Laboratory). When i read books i tend to avoid putting music on too you silly prick!
Maybe i could get a book and it's audio version. So i'm reading it, and listening to someone else reading it. we'll be best off keeping it in sync though i doubt Stephen Fry would make musch effort to keep up with me.

I still listen to it on my car stereo with the bass turned up on max, on tape. It is all warm, wobbly and womb-like. The CD is a bit cool sounding to me. This new bootleg reissue is mastered off the CD. Pointless. IMO. Boo :(

Agreed. I saw the vinyl reissue in the store and just about creamed my pants. I went on the Internet and read articles about it in which exclusive vinyl tracks were embedded from Youtube. Put on the record only to find that those exclusive tracks weren't on it. Major disappointment. To boot, there were ripping sounds through the second side.
I returned it, explaining that the 6 circles on the back didn't match the tracks on the record and that this was probably a bogus CD rip. I was happy I actually got my money back. Picked up "scintilli" instead.

i remember reading an amazon.com review of SAW II in which the chap said something like, "i just got this CD; was driving around in the car with my friend, and we put this on. next thing we knew, there were car horns honking. we realized we'd both been zoning out at a green light for thirty seconds"
saw II has that sort of effect on me too.
