All I seem to hear for this band is praise, all the time. Now, I understand the fact that they deal with the "art" of noise, and you must listen hard to "reveal" the greatness underneath, and their music may sound repetetive on first listen, but there are subtle changes during the tracks ect....but that's just the point-a track will go on and on and on for ages, with only subtle changes taking place...it gets nausiating! I wonder if Autechre could write a beautiful piece of musc on just the piano...hmmm....(In case you are wondering, I have all their albums, except lb5!)
I think the albums actually got progressively worse imo...now, that may make me look like some easy-listening dweeb who can only "cope" with their easier first album, but I do enjoy some madness or experimentalism aswell, like Sir Aphex Twin himself or the brilliant Squarepusher...you see, these two constantly change their drumbeats and they dive in and out of different time signatures and tempos, giving a very stimulating and challenging listen.
If only Autechre weren't so repetetive, I could really enjoy their later albums....(mind you, the second track of Tri Repetie was a masterpiece)

why did you get all the albums?
anyway, ae change rhythms a lot. look, this all seems to center around what you see as 'music'. if ae doesn't fall in there, you won't hear how good it is (and imo much much MUCH better than AFX or SP).
oh well. maybe another time.

Here's a tip, don't start listening to LP5/EP7/Confields first. Try Amber, it's good for starters.

thats probably a good idea. do that. my introduction to autechre came in the form of ep7, and that was not a good first impression.

I just gor roo much with the time. Hardly listenable. It looks like they realize that other copied them so they had to go even further and i just have difficulties to follow them since the show i saw here in Montreal.
They try too hard.

Autechre arent really making music for Everyone..if you cant get into it it's quite understandable..and no crime..just save some of your dosh and try before you buy..that way there's no room or need to complain..just accept that they are not your cup of tea and move on...

Autechre are good, and all you guys that don't like Autechre are bad people. That's the only plausible explanation.

flea you HIT the nail on the head there with your comments. their music is NOT for everyone. i used to feel like i didn't 'get something' cos i didn't really like them. now i just realize that most of there stuff i don't like!! and that it's OK for me to admit to.
i used to not like ANYTHING that autechre put out but i have since becomed enlightened =0) and realize that i actually enjoy quite a few tracks. the more MELODIC ones.
i already know what some of you will say, that there is melody in all of it. but i disagree and we'll leave it at that. what i call NOISE some call brilliant.
different strokes......i say =0)

Time for me to chime in, having struggled with Confield for a year.
If you listen to their albums in sequence, Confield isn't a total surprise. (With the exception of the LP5 detour.)
But if that's the next generation of sound, I'm getting off the bus. It's not enjoyable to listen to. I prefer more focused noise - like afx/73 yips. Or the beautiful analogue noise of Flying Saucer Attack.
I'll think I'll go away now and listen to "Garbage."
