i kinda hate how loosely the term "producer" is applied in electronic music, especially among unsigned acts

because most of the so called "producers" on this board wouldn't have a clue what to do with a(nother) band in a studio. that goes for handling equipment to motivating the band to hiring additional studio musicians to dealing with the label.

So what? They still "produce" music so they are by definition "producers". Many producers who know how to do the things you mentioned probably wouldn't know how to program synths, etc. But they're still producers.
I know what you mean, but honestly, does it really matter?

i see what you mean. appears to be just a miscommunication. you're talking like, 80s definition of producer...

I hate being called a producer.
producer to me, is the guy who oversees production.
Well, I write my music, so first off im a Composer. It just happens that its all on electronic equipment. So in that sense im a producer.
Composer/Producer is more accurate.
If i suddenly wrote a song on the piano would i still be a producer? No id be a composer.
Make sense?

You would be producing a song on your piano. If you think about it, a Symphony is a work of production - which instrument to use, how to use it, dynamics &tc. So, yes, if you wrote a song on your piano, you would be a producer. Not Phil Spector of course, but a producer nonetheless

i dont know.. it just seems that among the culture, producer means; 'person that makes music on electronic gear'
i see where everyone is coming from, this can all be paralleled to the whole music genre connundrum.. one mans jungle is anothers drum and bass.
but i digress.
not to throw the post violently back on topic or anything, but does anyone here have a record deal?

i disagree man
i mean i can understand your point of veiw...
but I think it would be more appropriate to call someone who writes on a piano, a composer. what i said above etc etc

You coined the term "composer/producer" which is a catchall label, so that's probably the most appropriate to use until they invent a new word, like compducer or proposer... oh wait, that one's been taken already.

obviously i know "your" definition of producer as well, i'm a hip-hop and electronica junkie i'd have to be totally ignorant not to understand what you guys are bitching about. most professional "producers" in those two fields not only can produce tracks (literally) they can also oversee the entire production (generally). i think it's weak to say anyone who can "produce" music on an instrument is a "producer." does that make singers producers cos they can sing? folk guitarists producers cos they can strum an acoustic? how about the piano players in bars, are they producers because they're producing the music people are hearing? get real. just cos you know your way around some software or some equipment does NOT make you a proper producer. and no i'm not going by some "80s" definition, i'm going by the definition that has always existed TO THIS DAY. you guys are the ones being liberal with the term.

if you're programming a drum machine (actually making the beat) you're a performer. if you're just setting something up (making sure everything's tuned correctly, making sure the right equipment is available to use) you're an engineer. the person overseeing this performing and engineering is the producer (which could in fact just be you if there's no one hired to produce the session).

Plus he's a trained audio engineer (like me, but I admit he's better). So he could "produce" another band in the studio.

ive had 2 releases on copilations. one in europe, one here in sydney. im also about to release my first ep locally.
i have been in and recorded bands for the past 9 years. i had a studio setup for bands running for about 4 years but have since moved all my gear to my house, and also sold a bunch of it. i dont have much use for mics anymore, and well, my 16 trak is outdated now that im using pc's. havent recorded a band in about 12 months, dont really miss it.
of also completed 2 courses in audio engineering here in sydney. 1 a basic introduction to studio work, the other a comprehensive live course.
any other q?s

arguments over semantics are pointless, particularly vehement arguments.
anyway, I'm on titsworth's side. I don't like calling myself a producer and I don't like calling myself a performer. I am an artist. and artists can get away with a lot more than producers anyway.

I produce sweat, by the BUCKETS. Fucking weather is slowly, systematically, methodically, calculatingly killing me with cruel heat. But now I'm home and in my basement, so I just produce SEX APPEAL!!!!!!!
...
I've ''produced'' a couple of tracks on FLoops too. I'd say calling ME a producer is a bit of a stretch, though...
