i read somewhere it's because of the acid side of his
music...

a > acid
ph > pH (acid too)
ex > just because it makes it sound good imo :)

Aphex is a registered trademark name of a manufacturer of
some of the equipment he had back in the day. Some old
school gear made by ''Aphex'' or something.

I think... :-/

I might have dreamt this, sadly I confuse my dreams with
real life sometimes.

Aphex is the name of a company that makes audio gear i
think?
theres a popular box called "Aphex Aural Exciter" wich is
used in most big proffesional studios.

offline Tasos from Athens (Greece) on 2002-06-21 21:20 [#00278964]

offline uzim on 2002-06-21 21:26 [#00278974]

maybe it's just a coincidence that aphex twin and aphex
systems are the same name...

birth or something.

Maybe its a word play with "effects" since Aphex Systemsâ„¢
produce effect boxes.

yeah, maybe we are reading it all wrong, maybe Aphex isnt
read Ay-phex, its Uh-phex, such as effects. Or maybe thats
what Aphex systems originally intended... What is an aphid
twin?

an aphid is a very very small green flying bug that eats
plants. they're quite the boon of gardeners and farmers.
ladybugs are enlisted to eat aphids.

yep, rdj originially went by just 'AFX' (often thought to
make listeners think of 'audio effects) and it just kind of
morphed into Aphex Twin over time... easy to see how, as if
you say 'AFX' really fast, it sounds exactly the same as
Aphex, and the twin part was obviously added as a refrence
to his late brother who bares the same name as him

It comes from the latin Affecks which means "to kill a man
with a rude sound"

hmmm...affecare sounds vaguely familar. it would mean kill
most likely. the latin verb "fecare" means "to do or make"
most latin verbs ending with "fec" mean kill, such as
interfecio. the word "affecks" however isn't a latin word if
i remember correctly because there are not endings as such.

I think the name "aphex twin" is kinda cheesy, imo.
it seems so pretentious....
but his music is good, so who cares?

well...i read somwhere i can/t remember,2 presumes:
1-A from acid and ph from ph like acid ph =>aphe.they did
not say where the ex came from.
2-aphex systems,a trademark that does electronic equipment
and stuff.

sincerly i think that the explenation for "aphex" is the
combination of 1 and 2.

"shouldn't that be apex?"

Yes, but it had Aphex with the same definition.

"Yes, but it had Aphex with the same definition."

really?...I just had a look at dicitonary.com and it didn't
come up with anything, just suggested misspelling of
Apex...

And the Oxford English Dict doesn't define it at all...
