I don't like the term electronica, but I believe you can
apply aesthetics of electronic music to acoustic music. and
I think much of the aesthetics of electronic music owe
themselves to some acoustic music, particularly (This is
just what I'm hearing) African music and classical music.

nah,
droid, plays live drum and bass.
i don't know about acoustic though, that would require
thousands of players.

i dunno... i'm just thinking along the lines of philip glass
minimalism i suppose.

coz he writes minimalist stuff for synthesizer & his little
orchestra... i just want to do stuff that i (myself) can
perform... without looking at a fucking computer screen.

two bass players
one normal bass
one bass hooked up to effects pedal
one crazy drummer.

it is crazy.

holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am going to try and find some stuff... are they somewhat
popular? or "heard of" for that matter?

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-05-16 03:49 [#00221791]

yeah...i was thinking it would be cool to have an
orchestra-like arrangement where the people make sounds with
various non-traditional instruments...as to imitate stuff
you would hear in electronic music...

though if think about it...in a lot of electronic
music...the sounds are originally acoustic...but just
arranged electronically...and the whole practice of making
music with 'non musical' sounds...which a lot of electronic
music is based on was first done before electronics were
used for music...like the futurists' art of noise...where
they made music based on the sound of machines and
stuff...using weird instruments/stuff
and then of course..a lot of the earliest electronic music
was just playing with tapes of field/studio recordings..of
non electronically produced sounds

First, we should define the terms "electronic" and
"acoustic" music.

i've heard jazz groups playing drum & bass.

Mike Oldfield is considered electronic even though he uses
shitloads of acoustic instruments

Yeah, Red Snapper is some of that kind. And Bands like
flanger? It sounds like a jazz combo but its all made on a
harddisk... The borders are blurred

oh, never heard of them.

but i hate when somebody tries to make "acoustic" music
w/machines and ends up sounding totally unnattural. (not
talking about artists you mentioned)

i heard this one group on the radio maybe 2 years ago. they
had double bass, fender rhodes and drums and it was a bit
jazzy and fast but chilled out. it was nice.

and i've heard something similar from 4hero, it wasn't
nearly as good though.

Fat kaimo: yeah, 4 hero are too pussy for me too...

Yeah, but I feel it's better that bands split while they are
still good than to go on making crap music like too many
bands out there...

Well, this topic touches something I was just thinking about
this morning. Ever heard Hot Rats by Frank Zappa. It's an
absolutely amazing album that reminds me of electronica in
the way it is mixed. It really sounds like its made on a
sequencer.

Yes he was. I know he was influenced by people like Edgard
Varèse, a pioneer in electronic music. I can really
recommend the compilation album: "OHM : the early gurus of
electronic music : 1948-1980" Its a pocket History of
electronic music and its bound to be interesting to everyone
interested by this particular topic on electronics and
acoustics....

man, Beefheart has got one of, if not THE voice of rock and
roll, i've heard nothing rawer or with more feeling than the
Captain.

Yeah, Beefhaert was an incredible singer and his band was
amazing... Too bad he got really fucked up with that disease
he has... But he still paints and his paintings are
excellent. Me and my friend did two DJ/VJ nights of
Beefhearts music last winter in a local club and it was
really great... We'll be doing Zappa in the autumn.

yes, deffinately a loss to music.
so too when Zappa died, another great loss.

I always see the Van Vliet name here in Holland and think of
Beefheart.

i'll be playin some zappa in my electronic radio show on
friday, dont know what to play though.

Heh, how about "Torture never stops"? Or portions of that
"Thing Fish" album. I heard it when I was 13 I think and was
totally cofused. A tripple album... But what happened to the
music?

Oh, yes! Captain Beefheart! I love him as well. Bat Chain
Pulla' : )

Autechre digs beefheart as well! Here is what they said
about him in an interview: "Fried avant-rock bluesman
Captain Beefheart is also a favorite: "Beefheart's fucking
techno," he says, almost to himself, assembling another
spliff. "He's ridiculously good. He's fuckin' really good,
he fuckin' is."

off "The Grand Wasoo". And maybe "Disco Boy". There is so
much to choose from...

That would be one hell of a religion. All priests would be
wearing trout masks and all the church music would be in
impossible time signatures. Ahh, I also really dig Don's
saxophone playing, he's allegedly self-taught but it's
extremely rooted in that new your post-ayler thing...
