who bought this album this week? i've been listening to
their previous album, Nia, all week just to get back in the
mode. but i have my copy ready for later tonight, and having
heard five songs from it and read many fan and professional
reviews of it, i can tell you that it is a formidable
classic (perhaps even better than Nia, which is an amazing
album). it came out this past tuesday, and if you live near
a Best Buy you can buy it this week for the bargain price
of

$7.99.

take my advice and pick it up. the production is shit hot
(chief xcel is the producer of the group, but it also has a
few tracks featuring dj shadow, ?uestlove of the roots,
hi-tek, cut chemist, and even ben harper). gift of gab is
one of my FAVORITE emcees and i know what i'm talking about.
he is just amazing. in addition, this album has a ton of
talented guest vocalists: saul williams, lateef the truth
speaker, lyrics born, miho hatori, ben harper, zack de la
rocha, charlie tuna, and jaguar wright. you can NOT go wrong
with this album, especially for under $10.

whats blacklicious like .. i think the only stuff of
theirs/his/hers i've heard was off some Mo Wax? compilation,
which had Dj Shadows Entropy on it .. and blacklicious also,
but i don't remember being overwhelmed by black..'s tracks?

The Compilations was Solesides: Greatest Bumps?

Speaking of such things .. what's Quannum like?

i just posted this url in another thread to you, but again
for all the info you need: www.solesides.com

blackalicious is on quite a bit of the solesides greatest
bumps compilation. gift of gab is the rapper and chief xcel
is the producer, so it's a duo. listen to the tracks on the
album, and keep in mind that those are nearly 10 years old
and imagine how much they must have matured (lyrically,
musically) since then. the new album is mindblowing. i'm
going to make my avatar a little ad for it to convert people
here.

quannum is chiefly: both members of blackalicious, dj
shadow, lyrics born, and lateef the truth speaker. it also
has new members like lifesavaz and other extended affiliates
like cut chemist, charlie 2na, etc. hit up that web site
above..

i wanna keep this thread going for a day or two to get
people's attention. this album is probably my favorite so
far this year, which says a lot. try out these songs:

release
make you feel that way
chemical calisthenics
brain washers
sky is falling

.....it's all overwhelming me, oak and elming me. release
arguably features saul williams' best performance to date.
the lyrics (he just goes off for MINUTES):
http://ebonight.blogspot.com/

$7.99 @ best buy, don't forget.

Tits: Its nice nice nice (ANTI CHEESY MUSIC)!!!

I even like Blazing Arrow better than NIA (but thats pobably
because I played NIA too much and got kinda tired of it).

Its so nice to have some new Blackalicious material. This is
some very well produced ambitious music no doubt.

I can never get tired of the track Shadow produced for NIA
tho.

Wich track did DJ Shadow produce on this one?....got to
check the booklet.

cliff hanger on nia (one of my favorites, great storytelling
and CRAZY beat); on blazing arrow shadow did an interlude
between paragraph president and it's going down. the title
in the liner notes for the interlude is "halfway home" but
it's not its own track.

just a reminder to everyone.. buy it!

others...make you feel that way is the most stand out track
i think. Its the kind of album that needs a few listens
methinks

can't you read? see my message, #00205670, right above. he
did an interlude track. anyway, being close to xcel and gab
(they're all part of quannum) i'm sure shadow saw how mca
was pressuring them to have a lot of outside producers and
vocalists, so he eased off on doing anything substantial.
chemist, also close to the group, did a sequel to his a2g ep
stuff. but chief xcel is the producer in blackalcious and i
think his beats (which are on almost every single track) are
the best.

the album is a grower for sure, but even initially i loved
it more than anything else i've bought this year. this week
i am really feeling "first in flight" (with legendary
jazz/soul singer gil scott-heron), "sky is falling" (has a
geddy lee on amphetamines type feel to it), and "nowhere
fast" (one of the album's lyrical highlights, and a great
guest spot from tracey of jazzyfatnastees).

i bought it ... its good but not great... i prefer older so
cali hip hop music like heiroglyphics, dilated peoples,
aceyalone etc

I think this album is dope. One of the best hip hop albums I
have ever heard.

Blackalicious got skillz!

dilated peoples' last album (expansion team) was a huge
letdown lyrically, they just had nothing to say. you can't
make that same claim about blazing arrow though. and i think
tons of tracks on it have the aforementioned cali vibe, tho
not as much as nia - this one is more musically
experimental. keep listening to it, mrtenzin, it's a grower.
there's not one bad song on it, tho jaguar wright kinda
fucks up "aural pleasure" for me.

I'm just today, I'm just the way I am
I am ever single day I am
I'm February, April, March and even May I am
I'm only what you make me hope I'm what you pray I am
Today I am, I'm never really far away I am
You better scope me like the hunter does the prey I am
You play "I am" out in the picture yes today I am
I'm everything your memory say I am

beautiful...

Word. This album finds the perfect balance between pulling
in outside help like Saul, Chali 2na and Cut Chemist and
still being a distinct Blackalicious product. Too many
albums are crammed with guest appearances and lose the
flavour of the artist, but this one doesn't. I think it will
take a few years for this one to be properly recognised but
it will be considered a classic.

And don't sleep on the Melodica EP, parts of which are on
the Solesides Greatest Bumps. Swan Lake is priceless.
