Do you think Ae feel..

..trapped in the 'must-be-on-the-edge' role they've created
for themselves?

I'm thinking about tracks like Gantz Graf. To me it's shit.
To me it's just a left over from EP7. They've done that
already and better on EP7 and Chiastic. To me they seem to
be trapped in this mould where every song has to be clicky
or distorted or a combination of both. Is clicky-dist really
the future of music, if so, I want to start looking back..

It's just their style I think. There's loads more to cutting
edge than just clicks...

clicky and distorted is getting very popular...ppl are
starting to call it "glitch" and i really don't like the new
ep, and doen't listen to them repeatidly enough to relate it
to their other work, but there other bands that are doing
this too.

I think they truly enjoy what they are doing and I also
believe that they don't give a toss about what we think of
it... If anyone have a ''must-be-on-the-edge' thing about
Autechre its probably Warp records...

Century!

thatks interesting... do you think that it's the label, heh,
labeling AE's image to be this way?

This is a topic that makes ya think. If you go back into
the past you notice that almost every other album (just LPs)
are different. The aesthetics of Amber compared to those of
Tri Rep are so different than like say EP7 to Confield.
Maybe they finally found themselves and will be into this
glitch style for a bit. I hope their next LP will be
totally different. Gantz Graf is an EP...so...it would only
make sense that they use that like they did Basscad EP or
Cichlisuite...to further that LP.

i like the fact that they created themselves a
"must-be-on-the-edge" role. as long as they dont create
music based exclusively on that criteria.

Alright!!!

I listened through Gantz Graf now and i loved it...

Cap IV is amazing... really. Yeah!! It gets so mad at the
end.

Gantz Graf is OK... I've had time to get into it and get
used to it, and it's OK... but it's still disapointing.
Confield was better, and EP7 was better STILL... maybe it's
just personal preference, but they're actually DECLINING in
a way, for me... the ''on the edge'' thing is great, but
they've gotta do something better than this... I just don't
think it matches upu to anything on Confield.

i totally agree with paco on this.....

i think Gantz Graf is pure crap.....and cant believe how
could anyone call that progressive music....cuz i think they
made that in hour or two, just fucking with confield
sounds...

anyway i would like them to get over that
digital-jerking-we-dont-care phase...

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-04-23 01:17 [#00189905]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

I don't think it's pure crap... but I think the pretension
is getting into the dangerously high levels. Gantz Graf
really let me down. There's no impressive musical compostion
in there, it's just noise... good noise, but still just
noise.

Fuck, I wish they could make another Arch Carrier or Rae or
Bike!!! I know going back isn't their way, unfortunately...

i'm waiting for the release to hear it. the first few times
i listened to Ep7 the music slid off like water off ducks
back; i couldn't recall it aftwerwards at all. like i've
heard the album 10 times and just started to hear the songs.

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-04-23 01:26 [#00189912]

Hmm, I think Gantz Graf is not very disappointing. I mean,
it sounds like stuff they didn't put on Confield, to some
extent. I think with their upcoming LP they'll forge ahead
and make their next big era of musical innovation.

offline Crocomire from plante (United States) on 2002-04-23 01:27 [#00189913]
Points: 2116 Status: Lurker

from what i can tell from interviews Ae like to give the
impression they don't care enough about roles and such to
worry about living up to any preconceived notions of them.

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-04-23 01:31 [#00189915]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

I think they do care, no matter what they say. Because
music is their hobby and their career. Sure, they probably
have enough cash to live comfortably for the rest of their
lives, but would they want to be known as an innovative band
who fell into a trap and have it ruin their careers? I
don't think so.

offline Crocomire from plante (United States) on 2002-04-23 01:38 [#00189917]
Points: 2116 Status: Lurker

i think they probably do care to some degree also. but i
also think maybe they unintentionally created that role by
strict artistic method: create what U want. they might
restle in their minds with these considerations, but i think
when it comes down to it they forge ahead with their art
with blinders on to most of the fans.

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-04-23 01:41 [#00189921]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

Hmm, that's a good way to look at it!
I just know that they'll get more into melodies and away
from all the clickiness in time. I wonder what the future
holds for Autechre!

"thats interesting... do you think that it's the label, heh,
labeling AE's image to be this way?"

Yes, I do! To a large extent, anyway! Every label do that.
Just look at how Rephlex promotes Astrobotnia for instance.
Another classic example is how 4AD in the 80's shaped the
image of Cocteau Twins, creating a stronger than strong -
almost suffocating - connection to the label. The band
simply could not deal with this in the end and left, leaving
the fans completely confused...

I dont think Autechre has the same problem with Warp, I
guess they feel quite at home there. But its undoubtedly an
interesting question what label Autechre would go to if they
had to leave Warp. It would also be very interesting to have
a look at the contract between Autechre and Warp...

offline joakim from Norway on 2002-04-23 15:32 [#00190597]

i don't think they're bothered about it, actually. i've read
quite a few interviews with them over the last couple of
years (dealing with lp5, ep7 and confield), and it seems to
me that they're just enjoying evolving and push their own
sound further and further. i don't think they're all too
caught up in what people want them to make next, or what
people might expect/demand. i mean, back in the day when i
first discovered them with tri repetae, it didn't leave me
impressed at all. it was too...out there. but then, you
gradually discover the underlying beauty and serenity in
each track, it's like the album uncovers more of its layers
after repeated listenings. as is the case with their newer
stuff as well (even more so). their latest records is the
ones i love the most, because they are the ones that are the
most rewarding, i think. so, it would seem like whatever
they are making, and eventually release, is way
controversial at first, but then...just drag you in.

it's in the ae nature i think to constantly evolve their
sound. and don't we all just love them for it ?

with autechre i feel that the more effort you have to put in
listening to it, the more you get out of it in the end. it's
not allways like this, but confield is a good example of
this IMO

Fuck, I wish they'd put some more pretty melodies in
there... I'm always a lot more impressed at a great melody
than I am at ''difficult'' music. It's a lot harder to do. I
want another Incunabla or Amber.
