google becoming a paywall

i am having a wMw moment. i'm trying to find the name/id of
a particular x-files episode -- NxNN, etc. -- and i input
sensibly relevant keywords into google. google demands i
solve a captcha. then another. then another. in exchange for
getting a result for my search query, i must perform a few
rounds of slave lavor.

then, the results are promptly shit. i get the episode i
found text-searching my USB video pod; google has zero to
offer. after all this brouhaha, they actually haven't
indexed the answer to the question i was asking, and my time
has been wasted.

You were probably looking for season 1, episode 2, "Deep
Throat", an episode with a lot of men in it.

Yeah I hate that, it gets worse if you're using a VPN, and
becomes almost impossible to solve if you have anti
fingerprinting enabled. It punishes you for anonymity and
rewards you for recognizability.

People assume captcha is for keeping robots out, but no,
since everything is orwellian, it's secretly for keeping
humans out. "Click on all the traffic lights", well what if
there's 1/4th or 1/16th of a traffic light in one box, do I
check that one, or just the ones 100% full of traffic
lights? It's designed so they can say you're wrong no matter
what you choose. So suddenly you're not allowed to use
whatever pieces of DARPA net they don't want you to use. I
don't know why they're giving you captchas to merely use
google, I guess they're rolling that out, like only the
naural link human botnet will be allowed to use google. I
bet they can solve the captcha... even though
they're robots.

it's actually put me off using google search -- which, come
to think of it, has declined in quality over time.

i've used duckduckgo for years; used their shortcuts (!g
whatever) to hop over to google if DDG doesn't find the
thing. they've never been as good as google, but they've
been improving.

there are other search engines readily available. sometimes
i've even tried bing (!b whatever); hell has officially
frozen over. in particular, bing's image search (!bi this is
fine) is better than anyone else... except, of course,
google.

so, yes, they are still the best, but there are plenty of
alternate routes that can deliver about 90% of what google
for search.

if they start doing it on google news or youtube, well, that
would could suck. for youtube, my main usage is playing
illegally uploaded music to listen to at work. i'd have to
copy mp3s to my work computer, just like i did before
youtube did it for me.

google news... actually, anyone know something equivalent?
that's not apple news, that i can just visit without signing
up or whatever? i actually am annoyed at myself for relying
so heavily on google news, but i've not found an
alternative. i've tried to get more into the habit of going
directly to the front page of various news sites rather than
trusting google to filter it all for me

"google news... actually, anyone know something
equivalent?"

These are much better than mainstream programming, not
equivalent:

just now, i wanted to run an image search. i was about to
type !gi, then i halted. they will just hit me with
recaptcha. i hate that shit. i will close the tab instead of
solve it. why even try in the first place

then i typed !bi instead and bing image search found the
thing promptly with no captcha.

stat junkies that the googlies are, they won't notice until
people move to competing services. i would encourage people
to move to other services.
