get a used one from a pawn shop for 1/10th the price, if its
even legal for people to sell or buy things outside the
oligopoly anymore

people used to ask me for advice like this; more generally
on PCs. i used to be on top of it. now, shit changes every
six weeks, and i don't really keep up any more. i've had
good luck with asus, but, heck, maybe they've had a bad run
the last nine months? i'm afraid you just have to research
what is currently on the market and doesn't suck.
more or less, for general "build quality," use the internet.
engadget and ifixit get neck-deep in that and "oh what
monitor should i buy" is now officially covered way better
elsewhere.

with displays, it's one of the few things i actually will
shop at a big-box store for. more or less, if it's a fucking
photo on amazon, you don't know how the picture looks. so,
yeah, not only research what doesn't suck, but go to some
store, whatever england does in place of "best buy" and
squint at the monitors; decide what looks most agreeable to
your eyes. but, ideally, informed by some research w/rt what
will not break

i opted for an in-between, recently. not off the back of the
lorry, not top-shelf. i went to walmart and went to the
cheap end of the spectrum; bought the cheapest one that
doesn't look like shit. it is shit, the resolution is shit,
but it's 32" or something and cost me less than $150.

i actually need to buy another, more proper monitor myself.
this was just an extra display for watching star trek or
whatev

yeah good advice cheers, yes I used to try and keep up but
as you said the rate of change in technology is so quick
there is no point unless your selling the thing, almost
anything is guaranteed to be better to what im currently
using

oh, sure, moore's law, whatever. i've never tried to stay on
the bleeding edge of hardware, because it's a waste of
money. always has been... but, now, it's even faster. the
old jokes -- weird al's "but it it was obsolete before i
opened the box" are more true than ever. especially now that
tech is fashion, in a sense, with gold-edition iphones.

but, yeah -- real takeaway is that there are a lot of review
sites that will literally take these things apart, as they
come out every two weeks, and say whether it's crap or not,
and that is a genuine service given the pace and instability
of what's good and what's crap.

I remember my gfs parents pavlovian response when 3d TVs
came out, and I was thinking aren't they just happy with the
60 inch tv they have now, my brother was using his tv from
1985 for about 25 years

i have... i think i still have... a collection of crusty old
CCD to RCA cameras. they all have different tones and colors
to them. TVs had a similar quality, in the CRT days. anyone
remember the two incredibly thin lines all trinitron
monitors had, roughly, dividing the display into thirds? it
was wires, holding the screen on

meanwhile, can you even do color-correction on TVs at all?
all this $15k 80" nonsense and your colors might be wack as
shit

Make sure it has a resolution of at least 1,136 pixlels
across or you may not be able to view the full width of the
xltronic update.

You can get some decent monitors 200 quid. Do you want a big
one (like 23" plus) one with a high refresh rate for playing
quake at 120 FPS, highest resolution etc?

Never ever buy the cheapest one they do in Argos though. I
did that and regretted it massively

güsync is also a thing to get rid of tearing without input
lag

that was supposed to be g-sync

Thanks for the replies guys, yes I think I will get a
slightly larger one as my eye sight is started to
deteriorate a bit I reckon, probably wont be long until I
need glasses like my brother

I will look into g sync, I have a nvidia graphics card so
perhaps it will be useful to get a compatible monitor

yeah our big Samsung tv you can alter the colours to your
hearts content, I assume it standard I don't know,

ideally id like a bit CRT sony monitor for my old retro
games as using filters on emulators doesn't look quite
right, but im not going to shell out for something I would
use infrequently

Also cos american TVs used the NTSC standard they used to
have a tint control on them didnt they,

something that has a decent refresh rate yeah, I don't know
if I will even play quake at 120fps so I guess larger screen
is what im looking for, but not ludicrously large like some
ive seen

I read a story on Reddit about a maker who designed a custom
4x10 array of iPhones to be used as a monitor which I
thought was fucking epic
