I tried to D/L a demo of Realplayer from the net, and now
you require a credit card.

Try versiontracker.com. You should be able to find the free
version there.

Realplayer sux.

Huh, there's a free version available, but you have to look
at the small print on real.com in order to find it.

That's why we'll use mp3 streams instead of real audio with
project x.

good idea? :-)

You're replacing one proprietary format with another. You
could use ogg, but people would laugh at you.

yeah. Real One did some crazy things to my desktop, it did
not live even an hour on my machine. Had to be uninstalled.
Unbelievably aggressive, and therefore stupid crap.

i totally agree... realplayer guys should get gemolt (f*cked
up)..mp3's still the best compression there is..

Yes, excellent. Realplayer is full of spyware and its
notorious put putting on lots of shit, I'll never get it
again.

I respectfully disagree. musepack is the best music
compression available, but lacks some things like hardware
support. It's also not open-source. mp3 is showing its age
nowadays.

you got point there but there aint no computer (well..
almost no computer) connected to the internet who hasn't got
a mp3player../

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-04-17 18:18 [#00180384]

Yeah. I know realplayer sux ugly goat cock. But the nice
people at Ninja/Big Dada and Warp/Lex are nearsighted enuf
to make it so that any online samples of music are realaudio
streams. No good at all. :(

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-04-17 18:20 [#00180385]

I have a program that records realaudio streams to mp3/wav
on my other computer, but not on this one.

At the same file size, musepack quality beats mp3 pretty
easily (whether cbr, vbr or abr).

vbr's a nice way of making mp3 last longer.... alhough i
must agree mp3 is beginning to get al little out-dated

get the crack from www.thecrack.net if you can't avoid
installing.
but be aware of the fact that it can't be deinstalled
easily.

i really don't like the new version of real player...the
"real one" i pefer the older version, and real jukebox...

as far as mp3 being the best compression, i have to
disagree...i've temped at microsoft, and learned quite a bit
about wma, and it's far better.

Technically that's right - wma results in the smallest files
at a particular rate, but it's generally agreed (at least in
the audio communities that I follow) that it produces the
worst sounding music.

Good results of listening tests are hard to find,
here's one that I took part in that reaches a few conclus...

It's a blessing (or a curse) that I have very good ears and
can hear compression artifacts in music, especially wma and
poor quality mp3.

You can't get much more proprietary than wma. I'll stick w/
mp3s thank you. wma and that musepack format won't play on
my mac.

i hate realplayer!
i only got it so i could listen to music sampels on some
sites.
it took me like a long time to even figure out how to get
the free version and configure everything.

you have to admit tho, the new realone player looks pretty
slick, even if it is total shit!

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-04-17 23:02 [#00180696]

The problem with MP3 is (legally) Phobia and myself cannot
have full tracks available for download. Then again, with as
many tracks as watmm and 'project x' will have up, perhaps
full recordings would be a bit space-prohibitive, not to
mention it's pretty easy to beat streaming technology
(recording ASF and RM files to WAV, etc.)

I have to disagree with the quality issue on WMA, I've
gotten MUCH better results from WMA than I ever did with
RealAudio, and the file sizes for WMA are half the size of
128k MP3s.

WMA can play on Macs, you just need the Media Player to play
them!

I predict a bright future for the ogg vorbis format in
streaming. It's totally free and has some really clever
features like "bit-peeling." That allows you to have one
high-quality source that can downgrade without re-encoding
to serve lower-bandwidth people.
