I was aghast to learn that two of my newer co-workers had
never heard of them. One of them is in her early 20s so
understandable but the other was 27, and that makes me feel
pretty old.

Been going back to Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion
a lot lately. Also, the Strangelove EP. I was playing a
mix at work for the older girl because I'm infatuated+ with
her and she likes me but we're both in situations and the
subject matter seems to best reflect how I feel about that.

That's nothing. I saw a discussion on YouTube where some
Skrillex fans were taking the piss out of Aphex fans,
because they hadn't heard of Aphex and didn't know his stuff
came out before Skrillex. Fuck the world.

Aphex is a big deal to us but Depeche Mode is a billboard
artist who had wide radio play. It would be more forgivable
to say you never heard of New Order or the Smiths.

Well it was only last year I bought a bunch of Beatles
reissue cds on sale and had to aknowledge that they actually
did some groundbreaking and cool stuff that I had missed out
on...and I'm turning 43 next month and grew up with Depeche,
New Order and The Smiths, allthough none of my peers had
heard (much) of them then....generations are divided within
by markers of identity.... the internet dilutes everything
and the kids growing up today are more mainstream than ever
but that must produce some counter reaction sooner or later
and...what the hell am I ranting about anyway? I'm not even
drunk, I'm at work! No office flirt for me btw, that's
sonething I miss from working at an office....no that's the
ONLY thing I miss from working at an office....

Mostly I play songs like Halo and Rush and give her the
Daniel Craig James Bond eyes from across the way. She keeps
a bottle of triple moisture body cream at her station that
keeps me crazy all day long.

I started out playing instrumental tracks from Burial,
Prefuse, and so on that were sexy but not specific and
mostly instrumental. Then I worked into playing more
suggestive stuff like Bjork - Hidden Place, Air - Sexy Boy,
Daft Punk - Something About Us. Dreamy, vibey, sexy stuff.

Then one day I turned up the temp and played some Prick,
like Animal and Tough, and Dirty Epic by Underworld and she
made some comments about needing to get back to church with
"everything going on" (I'm also pretty sure she had recently
peeked at my phone and saw some pics I had on there). So
Depeche Mode seemed like the perfect next step to show that
I have deep spiritual feelings even though what I do is
impure or whatever, because in truth I do really like her.
So Walking in My Shoes et al has been apropos.

is depeche mode sort of like that band that's famous for
those t-shirts with the muttering spectogram of a dying
quasar?

The good news is, we've talked and agreed that while our
situations should stay locked in, that we should be
close. That means the games and signals intensity
can be dialed back. For my most recent selections I went
sweet and direct:

Girl Afraid
Ask

and some others from Louder than Bombs
