Fuck. I can't believe it. I just found out.
He was one of my honest to God favourites.
Looking at his photographs, you could see it in his face.
The woman problems, the drug habit, and the purely sad gesture in his eyes.
He was a creative genius, the most talented of his kind in his generation.
His work conveyed emotion, purity, and beauty like nobody else in the world could achieve.
Inside of his soul he was soft and fragile.
As graceful as a ballerina.
When he looked in the mirror, he saw a narcissist.
Inside of his heart was a world of shame.
It was easy to form shallow relationships with people that he barely knew.
When admiration and adulation were available, he turned on the charm and readily accepted those gifts that were precious to him.
His outer self was as hard as a diamond and as cold as the arctic ocean.
He looked down on others as mere mortals.
All he wanted was to be loved by all.
His relationships were tortured and tragic.
And now he's gone forever.
Admired by all.
Revelling in attention like a pig in the mud.
He has left a great inheritance to all.
He has been redeemed and purified.
Now he is with God.
Pray for him.
Love him.
Lord please care for this special artist.
He wasn't perfect but he was beloved.
Amen.

I think Happiness was the first time I really noticed him, and it then took me a while to not identify him with that character.
I have a real soft spot for his work in Magnolia - such a soft, warm character, different to most of the roles he ended up playing.
I certainly can't remember him ever being bad in anything.

Yes, he was so creepy in Happiness. Lara Flynn Boyle before she got creepy.
Definitely Magnolia! I want to see that film again. Everyone was great in that, even Tom Cruise! The frog deluge...
I remember seeing a making-of and both he and PTA seemed so high on coke. The attitude, the constant sniffing. They didn't have a cold, lol.
I didn't see There Will be Blood. I should, right?

Thanks for reminding me I have this movie ready to watch. I didn't even know he was in it, I got it because of Kaufman.

The thing about the New York Scene is:
It's a tiny coterie of ashamed people trying to hide their true selves.
They hide their shame from the world.
What they want is sex with women.
And stable relationships to boot.
They ought not be ashamed.
They hide in a cave with their false selves.
They act as if they are the best, superlative, numero uno, the chosen.
But what kind of life is that?
Does retreating from the world solve their problems or make them harder to solve?
All over the world there are lonely women with wet muffs.
Waiting for men to get off their fat arses and make something good out of life.
As if retreating into a secret minority elitism will solve their life's problems.
As if it would resolve the issues that they need to deal with in their lives.
They've forgotten about their parents, neighbours, & family.
They don't realise that if they all worked together, their hearts would grow stronger.
Their talent would grow tall like an oak.
They could take on the whole world together if they wanted.
But they'd prefer to huddle in a cave, far away from the sunlight.
That's the trouble with the New York scene.

I thought your post was going to be relevant and about having to have two personalities when it comes to being addicted to heroin.
Fuck off with your wet muffs.

recently saw Hoffman's last starring role in some Euro conspiracy thriller the most wanted man or some shit. The movie was pretty wack til the end when (SPOILERS FOR PPL WHO WANT TO WATCH PSH EURO CONSPIRACY THRILLER LAST STARRING ROLE) Hoffman's plan went all to shit and everything went wrong and he was just standing going FUUUUUUUUCK in a euro accent and then he drove off in a mega huff then he just got out of the car and walked off into the distance while the camera stayed in the car and you saw Philip disapearing up the street in a mega rage. Maybe he went off to score some smack too. Then well, that was the end of phil unfortunately and the movie just went to black + roll titles . anyways I know he still got bit parts in those hunger game things but as a last starring role It was an awesome scene to end his career with + made the movie seem a lot better than it was.
also I clicked this thread thinking it was the banksy one and I was like OMG banksys dead + he was soft and fragile inside ? who knew
