Do you think that "electronic dance" and genres like
bigbeat, downtempo and dubstep could ever become "IDM" with
greater objectivity and more intelligent sonic power? What
would be needed to achieve this? Could it be achieved simply
by utilising more 303s to generate more accurate beats, or
is something different or more fundamental required?

'Big Beat'? What's that?

There is overlap, music genres are just sections in record
shops so you can find stuff. For instance Acidic sounding
influences can be found in all those music types mentioned
:)

Look up. "Bass time continuum" & "redbull lectures" and
watch a few. Kode 9?

the best shit is hard to classify. it's the result of a mind
that doesn't see genre boundaries; instead sees what works
and what doesn't.

"stop the panic" by luke vibert & bj cole is a fine example.
is it electronic? hip hop? surf music? acid? it has all
these things, and more. you don't exactly picture them
sitting in the studio, saying to each other, "whoa there,
let's reel it back in, we're straying too far away from the
definition of hip hop."

so why should anyone else care? except, as jaser said, when
it's used in a how-to-organize-the-bookshelf sense.

Little boxes.. More and more, smaller and smaller ones. It's
absolutely stupid and does fuck all to promote personal
creativity.

it's perfect, though, in light of the galapagos island shit
this scene has going on. i figure there have to be at least
a few biologists on this board, people that spend all day
classifying and naming species of mosquito in a specific
geographic region of the amazon rainforest. it's like
violence at a hockey game, genre arguments will always
happen in any nerd crate like this

why don't as many women compulsively classify and sort? or
even have stamp collections? nature or nurture? hardware or
software?

The comment is still relevant. To me at least.

Nice going with the clichés there, Nevs! I thought you
tried to avoid that. Just like i'll avoid saying you
obviously don't know many women.. Aaaanyway..

a cliche is an overused expression, perhaps you meant
stereotype? at least, i think you meant that.

i don't know much of anyone, i sit in a basement all day
coding and fucking with synths, but the statistics are on my
side, here. same as saying "professional boxers are mostly
men," it's not bias, it's fucking fact. all i intended to do
was throw the question of "why" to the minds of XLT, much
like throwing a baby gazelle to a pack of starving hyenas. i
figure we can have the issue sorted before teatime tomorrow;
don't disappoint me.

Overused or not, it doesn't nulify it's meaning when used
correctly. Also you've 'forced' me to say that i like the
word because i speak french fluently.

Your second paragraph was really boring.

Post your sources for the stats that back you up Nevs. Your
straw man argument about boxers doesn't work.

i don't care about boxers, that was an analogy. stop
tangenting this extremely important debate.

'Tangent' isn't a verb.

Post your sources Nev or step back into your grief pit.

spelling sense

I only really enjoy softcore transient-delay aquaphonic
soundscapes featuring dead rappers on vocals.

i'm more about electro/avant-garde but still slightly
dance-y albums whose opening track title involves the word
"disco" somehow. some standouts from this genre include
ladytron's "604", bottin's "horror disco" and coil's "love's
secret domain"
