typhoon who gives a fuck

some typhoon hit some country, and consequently the news
has been all OMG OMG OMG for the last few days. i find
myself not giving a rat's ass. the world is a big place, and
you can find terrible, horrible, tragic things happening any
hour of any day. keep current, and you'll spend 24/7 in a
state of white-knuckle horror, donating to red cross relief
efforts every time you get paid. like a crack hit to a
crackhead, this brings but momentary relief....

maybe i actually would donate cash if i had it, but somehow
that just feels lazy; like getting someone a gift card
instead of something thoughtful. if i were serious, i would
buy a plane ticket with some visa debt to wherever the fuck
this is and pitch in. that would mean something. but, a
month later, there will be a typhoon somewhere else, and at
that point my visa won't have the headroom for another
international relief flight.

"news" outlets get a major hardon every time this shit
happens, as it makes them the dollars. ditto for charities
like the red cross. i remember after katrina, they got so
much cash they weren't able to spend it. what happened to
the rest? who knows... ditto for blood donations; so much
excess they just sold a lot of it or let it spoil. what
shit.

i'm sorry for soggy/typhooned peoples; i hope shit works
out. i just don't think me donating $50 and 15mins sympathy
will make any difference whatsoever; see you next news
cycle. i don't like being callous in regards to something
like this, but i feel i must be, out of psychological
self-defense. i can't live in a state of panic my whole
life, ya know?

What I find annoying is how the news broadcasters almost
seem to want chaos to break out in the aftermath. The field
reporters always push the idea that it's really dangerous,
and people are on the verge of rioting etc etc. I really
noticed it in the Haiti earthquake reporting. But actually
people were just getting on with cleaning up the mess and
shit. No riots or nuffin.

i mad @:

* how all sorts of profiteering gluttons swarm the tragedy
like flies on a corpse; feasting on it.... and how most
"citizens" get very upset if you try to discuss this current
state of affairs. OMG U HORRIBLE BRO

* how there's always something. bus turns over, typhoon
hits, crop fails, whatever. if i took the time to feel bad
about half of it, i'd just be in a fetal ball of depression
all day. me sitting at home and feeling concerned/depressed
does not help anyone. it forces me to be a bit of a cunt out
of self-defense.

* how someone from the Philippines will read this and
probably hate me. 'cos that's not what i want. that's not
where my beef lies.... if anything, they're a victim in all
this BS.

It's called compassion. It's not all about you.
