A good life is not neccesarily a happy life. Would you agree with this?

society gives you this skeleton of a life plan. childhood, college, job, marriage, kids, retirement, death. some people have a great ride on this train, others don't. it's only a problem if you hate it, but stay on the train anyways due to lack of balls/imagination. if you like it and stick with it, cool. if you don't like it and come up with your own plan, cool. just don't sit there whining... monoid

First of all, to have a natter we need to know what you mean by the 'good life'.
You obviously don't know many drug addicts.

By good life i mean following and doing the things which are important to you. Things and activities that you value and which aren't neccesarly 'fun' or will make you feel good in every case.
I know that there are people who use drugs 'to expand their mind' or whatever. And people who drink recreationally. Their is nothing 'wrong' with that in my opinion. I am talking about hardcore drug users...whereas 'drug' could mean a lot of things, from internet addiction to eating disorders.

Yep screw that whole default life plan shite. Especially the bit about having kids. Don't have kids - keep the money and spend it on yourself, yo.

True Happiness ends up being appreciation and contentment. The "happiness" that most people seek, is a fleeting emotion based on immediacy and the unrealistic concept of infinitely rising pleasure (due to tolerance buildup). True Happiness does not feel good all the time-- it is more an abstract sense of knowing one has/is doing well, helping others, and making the best out of time. We can't always be on heroin/e-up-the-ass.
So yah- the best lives lived are not necessarily the ones that are filled with the most endorphinez. However, the best lived lives were lived by those who had a sense much higher than can be realized by merely following superficial pleasures. It takes hard work and incidental mental/emotional anguish to get to that state-- this pain is not necessary in and of itself but it is usually a perceived byproduct and indicator of emotional/spiritual growth.
Overall- in a general sense- "happiness" is overrated, and "pain" is underrated.

the idea that pain is inherently noble is a load of horseshit. the idea that your whole life can be a cakewalk is naive.
