If you're talking "techno progress" as an alternative, invest in early, deleted, Deepchord vinyl. It gets pretty good returns as a percentage. The only danger of course, is that a repress could devalue your "shares" very quickly.
I suppose therein lies the appeal of investing in precious metal; unless we discover a way of transmuting other, cheaper materials into them, at a cost of less per gram than the current market rate for the material*, they will never be worthless and will be unlikely to ever be significantly devalued.
With the way banks are going, translating your wealth to palladium bullion, to be locked in a hidden safe, behind a fake wall in your loft or basement increasingly seems less like the actions of a survivalist nut job and more like the actions of a rational man.
*and if this happens, "being poor" will be vastly more tolerable than it is today, anyway.
