LAZY_TITLE

suppose it was inevitable. nice format, but you still gotta
dub things over.... digital recorders were always gonna end
it.

they were rooted in tapes and CDs where you had to dub it
over -- play it from one device for another for however long
it was. i know it's digital, there's probably some way to
rip/burn them as fast as you would a CD, but most of the
portable players didn't have anything like this (as far as i
know).

i got one with optical; never use the optical. it's a nice
little thing. i've used to record gigs, as a backup when the
computer is on the fritz, and i've also left it set up for a
few months next to the piano with a cheap preamp and a pair
of mics for whenever the mood to keysmash hit...

...but at the end of the day, i still had to bounce it back
through into the computer. if you use a "digital" recorder
(poor choice of words, sorry) you can just plug in USB and
copy over a WAV. not being able to do that easily pretty
much guaranteed the MD's days were numbered.

i see what y mean epics. : )

time consuming. and most consumer units didn’t have
optical out.

i did a fair few recordings. had to borrow my works
expensive MD to get an optical digital out.

If you have some nice recordings its worth coming out
digital,if you can , saves on two conversions MD>
DAC>ADC>PC.

Hey epicmegasnax,

you should do a mini-disc only release of your unreleased
musics. you could do the album art for the disc and you
could sell it to your hardcorest fans! it would be a nice
exclusive thing for the people who love your music.

be sure to only use instruments you made yourself or else
you are just going to be a part of the crowd. and you,
epicmegasnax, most certainly stand out from the crows so go
forth and show them your shining diamond

i just checked, mine will only do optical going IN, not
going out. honestly, i've never used optical anything, and
even if it did output optics, i would not know what to plug
it into. i think my living room stereo receiver has this
type of connector and from there i could convert it to
s/pdif....

i'll figure it out someday. i have a tub of about a hundred
of the buggers that need cataloging and ripping.

i used a hi-md recorder for years. wonderful format, several
hours of listening on a single battery.

sadly, the software for uploading/downloading music on it
(sonicstage) was a sad piece of fuck, slow and horrible.

it's just sad how sony was always good at creating great
hardware, completely obliterating it with horrible software
or anti-piracy measures.

My grandad went all-out with minidiscs, he has a huge
cabinet full of classical shit and old '40s swing recorded
from radio. Kinda cool seeing an old geezer embrace new
tech, shame it was the wrong one eh

MD -- coolest music format ever. Love that shit.

Except I tossed my MD recorder and all MDs a couple years
ago.

I remember listening to some stuff on MD over at Jonesy's
(remember him?) place.

MD makes for a pretty good quality cheap field recorder. My
other half used to use hers for interviews for radio shows.

I used a sony hi md to do field recording for a few years.
Never once let me down and the on board pre amps were
quality for the price. It was so lightweight and small and
cheap that I took it everywhere, the only problem was
transferring files...

rev I: a portable device with a touchscreen. runs android in
some future universe where android audio is not like the
boston molasses disaster of 1919. quality stereo mics; high
fuckin' quality preamps + shit hot A/D. wifi. usb. SD slot.
maybe some shit like optical that i don't understand, just
to be professional.

rev II: make it so you can just hook up a big monitor,
keyboard, mouse, and usb controller (wireless, micro-usb,
whatever) and get a proper editing rig by plugging some gear
into a hotel TV's HDMI

rev III: there is no rev III

hi epic's, you may not even need optical depending on your
setup.

optical is just a way to transmit 0's and 1's between
digital devices.
light travels along the tube between devices.

its easy to connect and it keeps the digital audio info true
to the original recording.

if you want to send audio info from one device to another,
but instead use the analog ins and outs on the devices, you
will distort and change the original signal. ( varies on how
good the convertors are)

converting adds things like noise, change in frequency
response, distortion of the wav fille from the conversions
and also added latency, crosstalk , interference.

but with optical, the 1's and 0's remain the same.

eventually a conversion is needed from digital to analog to
hear the information through the speakers. but the less
conversions during a project the cleaner the output.

ummmm..... i understand all that, thanks? i just meant that
the little optical cable that came with my MD is a fucking
alien device to me and i don't know what to plug the other
end into.... understand the theory just fine.
