The main purpose of guns is to kill. Imagine if there were a group of dudes just totally furious, yelling that their BATTLE AXES will only be taken from them when they're dead. That's what it's like. I went shooting at the weekend. I didn't produce any ID, licence or anything, just turned up, paid, sat through a 5 minute safety briefing, shot for a while and then went home. It's not quite as "no one at all has/is allowed guns" here in the UK as those in the states might believe. What is different, is that it is a relatively niche hobby and that owning/carrying firearms (particularly those that are in any way "concealable") is much rarer. Consequently, when I got into a dispute with six imbeciles in a nightclub later that evening, I only had to consider the need to glass any of them that pulled out a knife and fight my way into line of sight of the bouncers, rather than fretting that one of them might have had a "concealed carry" and suddenly produced a pistol. |

There are fundamentally two angles to the whole "right to bear arms" gun ownership thing. The idea that I should be allowed to go shooting recreationally (or hunting) is one and it's reasonable to argue that for this I don't need a concealable small arms, explosives, assault rifles or mental shit like chain guns. The other idea, is that freedom to own guns is not about 'sport', but rather based on the idea that it ensures the government won't try to make me their slave past a point I am prepared to tolerate (because I benefit from the relationship with their 'society' by at least as much as I lose). In this latter model, you can quite reasonably (in a wide-eyed, manic sort of way) argue that you absolutely do need assault rifles and land mines and grenades, because the army have all those things and it's them that you'll be fending off. I suppose the more rationale counter argument is that if your country's objective is solely to defend itself, you can do so with a very small (and relatively under-armed) standing army and a well trained and armed populace. I think the Swiss have a pretty good model of that. Their civilian populace are trained and armed well enough that invading them would be a really bad idea. At the same time, whilst a lot of them have guns, they are not constantly blowing each other away, using them to commit crimes, or amassing weaponry that looks like it should be in a Terminator film. |

Yep I normally make that grenade point in jest but there's little reason to actually prohibit mass grenade ownership if you're coming from a hardcore 2nd-amendment supporting position. As an aside re Switzerland, I love the way that country is run. As a confederation with tiny cantons, it ensures the government is very close to the people. I'm convinced (but couldn't back it up with a shred of empirical evidence...) that smaller, more local, decentralized governments generally lead to better-run states with happier populations. Basically, imagine Canada if the whole country was carved into Atlantic-size, city-state-ish provinces, instead of massive cumbersome things like Ontario with constant animosity between the capital city and the other bits. Also the whole shizzle where Switz basically decides everything with referendums (referenda?) |
