Really doesn't need to be dragged out into 3 films. Could easily have been done with one

literally can't watch any of the films - either fall asleep, or get totally confused then fall asleep.
maybe cos the books seemed totally overhyped to me when i young, didnt see what the fuss was about.
might give the 1st lot 1 last go...

i agree. breaking it up into three movies practically guarantees it'll be longwinded and put ol' steve right to sleep.

fwiw, lord of the rings is confusing as a book, too. tolkein's universe of languages and culture is v. impressive, but in practice there are over 9,000 names like "J'Wynzblaer" and i had to keep a google window open by the third book, because it's easy to confuse characters. most of these names were just distractions.
i suppose it's like the bible: there are some exciting parts, but there's a lot of boring genealogy babble weighing down the middle. the hobbit (book version) was much punchier and fun, but it was condensed into one book and spared you much of the nonsense of the LOTR trilogy....

I really enjoyed reading the books, except for all those bloody elf songs and poems. Hey, ninny nonny, this and that! Oh sod off you pointy-eared little shits, let me get back to the story.

I think there are going to work in all of the appendices from the LOTR books etc. that tie it back into the Hobbit. Whatever Tolkien wrote to retrofit Sauron back to the necromancer etc.

Silmarillion film would be stunning. that's something you could legitimately stretch into a trilogy

*throws tomatoes*
Ultravisitor is the last 'proper' thing he did. After that was Ok... to me it was the end of what I perceive to be his (more interesting) 'experimental' phase. After that he just did what he already knew, safer and perhaps better for him at the time.
As for the movie. Not sure if I want to see it. I love the book. It's my comfort read. My mind is too weak. These days I can't read Lord of the Ring without seeing Elijah Wood as Frodo and Ian McKellan as Gandalf. Best just stay away and not pervert my mind with such images.

I hated the books of LOTR. Thought the film of it was quite good.
I liked, but didn't love the book of The Hobbit. I suspect the film will be quite poor, but will see it at some point.
