I am born to palestinian parents Epicmega, but i didn't grow up there. I don't identify with any country as my own but still, my family has been directly affected by the brutality. My dads father was shot dead at home in Jenin when my dad was 12 yrs old, his family was evicted afterward (9 children at the time). I know what you mean that both sides are retarded but thats just the nature of such a conflict. I wrote my comment above cause i always found it hard to get my message across to brits and americans about the way we see things, im not trying to insight dread though or start any arguments really.. But to answer your question fully, i have actually met a few IDF soldiers at a few places around the world. Some are very good people who i consider like brothers, but to be honest too many of them are bad people. |

i actually spent a month in israel (on business). military service is mandatory; everyone was either in it or moved there after they were too old. the whole country is the IDF, more or less. i found it quite surreal -- guys walking down the street with their girlfriends, carrying machine guns. people paid the soldiers with guns no more mind than they would have businessmen in suits.... until i did the tourist thing and went to jerusalem, the via dolorosa, etc. there, the mood was much more tense. i saw that youtube video of people heckling soldiers, and my thoughts were: these guys are right to be scared. they don't know if they're going to get shot, or have rocks thrown at them, or what.... easy to call someone a coward when you're not in their shoes. |

Thanks for the perspective Epicmega, i completely get what you mean. About Jerusalem especially, I've been as well in 2002.. Anyway there's no point in taking sides here. The way i see it is a matter of standing right in the middle. On one end you have Hamas and on the other end you have a Zionist government (neither represent the good people or innocent). Monoid your statement is totally false, to put it bluntly.. No one from the left ever defended Hamas, they say palestinians have a right to resist, not attack israelis indescriminantly. And Israel is not a multi ethnic society as you make it seem, do some research on how they keep black jews in ghettos and refuse them equal rights. And that's without mentioning how they treat the arab. The main reason the "left" focus on palestinians is cause in todays world you can't go about attacking israel verbally at ease, for obvious reasons. So they focus on the palestinian story to bring to light what's happening. Everyone should bear in mind that they all lived peacefully together in the early-mid 1900's, not just peacefully but as equals. They still do in some places (Iran has a healthy jewish population for example) and it'll be possible in israel if it weren't for all the blame and intimidation (apart from religious drive which lurks in the background). |
