So I just got back from the city center to buy stuff for
making sushis.... But I've been drinking and partying for
over 3 days non stop so I got zero motivation whatsoever...
Do you like sushis ? do you make your own too ?

I bet you say "Legos", too.

I enjoy sushi. I have made my own sushi twice. I was
impressed by how it looked 90% as good as 'real' sushi and
tasted 100% as good.

My favourite all you can eat restaurant is Shabu Shabu,
which is a sushi joint. Perfect food for all you can eat,
because it normally tastes great, but is really unsatisfying
and you end up getting a McDonalds afterwards to feel full
in a 'normal' sushi bar.

My stomach was all, "Yeah, that fancy cultured stuff is
great tasting and everything, but I am going to make you
feel like you're going pass out in two hours unless you get
some proper meat and carbs in here."

I like sushi, specially with soya sauce, but I do not like
making them!

it's really long task making them like 3 hours for the rice
to cook and step, cutting the raw fish with ceramic knife
but the most annoyng part is putting the sticky rice on the
seaweed sheets.... jesus im not ready for that crap again...
But got to be because it's for my wife's aunt birthday
grrrrr Why did I propose myself 3 mounths ago ???

just make bacon instead - 10% of the effort, and just as
decadent when presented properly :P

My signature starter dish is dates, with the stones removed,
stuff with cheese and wrapped in slices of bacon, then
grilled, glazed with a balsamic reduction. Bacon never
looked/tasted so classy.

Sounds alright. Do you buy the dryer ones or the softer
Medjool type for example? I don't like the dryer
varierities. I'm guessing you use the bigger and softer type
if you stuff them.

you mean dry seaweed sheets ? well they're kind of dry but I
always put some rice vinegar on the sheets befor rolling
them :)
I was happy because I really had no motivation at all this
time :)

Yes, large softer ones. I usually avoid stoneless and stone
them myself as I find the 'cavity' for stuffing is better
defined and ends up looking neater.

Yes and Sainsbury's do them. When I lived in Oldham (near
Manchester) I'd probably buy them for lunch once a month.

I found it a real ball-ache to make small quantities, but it
worked well for making large volumes for parties etc. I have
no idea how long sushi keeps. Could I make some Sunday and
take it for packed lunch all week?

offline misantroll from Switzerland on 2012-09-27 14:15 [#02441853]

no you don't want to do that ! Mind you I don't cook them
often because it's long and coasts a little too but once
every 3 mounths or something and then I make maybe 50-60
different ones and you have to eat them in maximum two days
or if you put them in the freezer right after doing them you
can eat them later if the fish was realllly fresh but be
careful because fish products are very sensitive (their
feelings too)...

This is going to sound retarded, but can you freeze sushi?

offline misantroll from Switzerland on 2012-09-28 08:52 [#02441947]
Points: 2151 Status: Lurker

you can freeze almost everything but as I told you don't
wait when finished you have to put them directly into the
freezer !
But yes you even can find frozen sushi in some supermarkets
over here...

i just had some today as a matter of fact. from henry's
market. i think they're the last grocer to carry them.
scratch that, the super markets in the richie rich parts of
cali still carry fresh sushi trays. all the other grocery
stores only have rolls with no fish only veggies and
imitation crab. weak sauce.

i can honestly say, short of a miracle, i'd never want to
try and make my own at home. the rice... ugh. and the
cutting of the fish. guess i'm just super lazy. i would
still like to try making my own, perhaps, at a place where
they have all the stuff for you and they teach you really
quick.

i always enjoy a nice japanese brew with the meal. usually
kirin, but today all they had was sapporo, just as good
imo.

cheers!
