not sure if happy about honesty or mad about the "everyone does it argument"
still - at least it is nice that someone from the very top risks loosing at least a few fans for saying stuff like this out loud.

what about squarepusher then ? the ufabulum shows are absolutely dead-boring even with the more complex music.
and it's also 100% prerecorded.

I don't understand why he (or anyone) is even bothered by this heckle? If anything it would've been better to just either move on or stay on the topic without slandering every other DJ and/or live act in existence, as i understand from his rant. (Read his actual rant before this summary/review of it).
Every artist gets some shit like this, i sometimes get asked to put on a different track/track "this and that" while i'm on stage, doing a live show. And I don't give a toss really.

but the problem is clearly stated:
does the viewer actually really want to see an exciting and "live" show that actually might end up crappy or rather something where he won't risk wasting 20$ for a ticket to a bad show.
i'm deliberately avoiding mentioning artists who are famous for a specific technique of playing which in most cases is the result of musical and technical education rather than practice. see jeremy ellis, tim exile, daedelus. i rather want to talk about the "boring techno dj" who can't program, play instruments live or sing and has a very limited field of live interaction.
i personally have invested a lot of time into creating a performance which would be not only interesting to listen and exciting to watch, but which would also give me the satisfaction of "doing something more than just press play". reaktor patches, self made midiboxes, you name it. i can't play any instruments, sing or whatever would be possible else to do.
this all resulted in me not playing at all anymore. the constant hiccups and crashes just couldn't be redeemed by my music and people where rather pissed off than happy about me trying to be creative on stage. so i started to play more and more prerecorded sets and the crowd suddenly was happy.
problem is that i stopped having fun on stage and feeling really bad about tricking the audience that they are experiencing something exciting.
so i shouldn't blame anyone for doing stuff like this but in the end it ticks me quite off seeing a full-time artist (which IS in fact, a job) basically not giving a fuck. and that's the sole reason i will choose any underground laptop controlerist battle above an amon tobin, squarepusher or deadmaus set.

the few times i did an electronic music session live it was with a friend and what we did live was the mixing of the tunes (+fx) he drums, me melodies so that we pressed play over a bunch of compatible pre-established melodies and beats
(but not always same beats for same mel's, we just didnt know what the other would mix) but the construction of the tunes were different every time and we had to react to the others act and it was quite fun and somehow interesting from a creative point of view
here is a tune of our first concert (2007), the only one recorded...and here another were beats&mels didnt really fit that well...

So far the musicians/performers I've seen that agree with him are all Ableton users.
