My tune is getting released on RAMP Recordings

Yeah bitches, that's Tom Kerridge's label. It's going to be
on a 12'' with two remixes, one by ScratchaDVA and another
by possibly one of the Blunted Robots dudes. Funk Butcher
did one as well.

Just thought I'd share.

Remind me not to buy from RAMP recordings.

don't worry about it troutmask, both barcode and sadist are
stuck in the 90s.

It's cool, I was genuinely interested. If you were to not
buy from RAMP, you'd be refusing to buy Zomby, which would
be absurd in my view.

the whole track sounds very cheap. the drums and the pads
sound like you used stock fruity loop samples. the bass is
kinda nice tough.

i guess it would be kind of a nice atmospheric track with a
little filter work on the pad, but then after the second
minute hell breaks loose.

the vocals don't fit at all and totally kill the mood. nice
mangling on them tough but "shake that" to a beat like this
?

and what is that volume jump about ? that's like the most
dj-unfriendly thing you could ever do. i'm actually kinda
surprised that with something like this it gets pressed on
vinyl.

I synthesized the drums and pads. They aren't sampled, nor
are they made with digital instruments. I coded them from
the ground up. Every sound is exactly how I want it to be.
Same with the vocals - I used three 3-second voice samples
to make all the vocals you hear on the tune.

I don't make tunes with DJs in mind. The DJs who have been
playing this tune in London every day have been able to work
with the tune quite well, and it is, in fact, on them to
make a song they like work with their sets.

If you knew anything about pressing tunes onto vinyl, you'd
know that they have to go through a somewhat formulaic
mastering process before they can be pressed to wax. I trust
that the mastering engineer will make the dynamic changes
necessary to make the track fit for vinyl release.

With regard to the "volume jump" - I don't know, what about
it? Dynamic shifts are a pretty standard thing to do in
music composition. Have you ever heard a tune not made with
a drum machine and synthesizer? A lot of those tunes have
varying dynamic levels...

You didn't perceive it as going up to dramatize the entrance
of the chorus? That was the idea... it's a "binary
contrasting" kind of thing.

To be honest I think you're looking at it with the wrong
state of mind. We didn't make this song to be danced to in
clubs. Two remixes by high-profile UK Funky producers have
been done for just that reason. We come from classical
backgrounds, not dance music ones.

exactly my point - the beginning doesn't build up to this
climax. i could assume that a few more people would think
like that if the waveform on soundcloud would be hidden.

on the other hand you have something on wax and i will never
have. so who am i to talk.

u forgot to mention the beats. deliberately out of step to
make the track sound cool, but all it does it make it sound
a mess. then there's the snare, which is out of step of the
out of step beats - making it sound like a 5 year old made
it.

the volume thingy is complete laziness. only an idiot would
mix at completely different levels so one sound drowns out
all the others - especially when that sound is a badly
time-stretched sample from dr who.

anyone who says this is good is either tone deaf, has no
taste in music or is crawling. better off telling it how it
is so the poor so might make a listenable track one day.

out of step?? the rim shots are on the 2 and the E of 2.
It's cut time. sounds like you just have no sense of rhythm.
also, what snare are you talking about? I didn't synthesize
any snare sounds for this song.

What sound is being drowned out? Who or what is a dr who?

If you can't hear the problems inherent in your rhythm track
you shouldn't be making music - even for fun.

Well imho the tune isn't bad. It's the mixing that makes the
track sound kinda cheap and amateurish.

Don't like the kick drum sound. It doesn't really sit well
in the track. Snare drum sounds kinda generic as well.

Bass misses low end. Where's the sub? it needs to go really
low.

If you go down this "minimal" route the sounds need to be
really well produced and work well with each other.

I think the track has potential. composition and
atmospherics are good. just the mixing (has nothing to do
with mastering) is severly lacking.

Congrats with the release thoguh

Perhaps I'm just getting old, but I find almost all dub step
to be very boring.

What snare is everybody referring to?! I made this tune,
guys - there's no snare sound in the song.

isnie, thanks for your comments. However, here is
a spectral analysis of the master fader with the bass track
solo'd. It's pretty full-range, if you ask me, and the bass
is already placing the most emphasis on the sub-frequencies.
Also, if you listen, the low-passed drum track that starts
off the tune in the beginning goes throughout the entire
song. I'm just saying I must disagree that there isn't
enough sub-bass in this tune. Despite your other
constructive suggestions, I don't think I'll be adding any
extra sub-bass.

To be honest, I've not heard this tune through the
SoundCloud account much, but I just played it here at the
studio. It sounds kinda weird at times for me - I can sort
of see what people are referring to with respect to the
kick. It seems like a lot of the sub-bass in the track is
basically missing too. Also, I'm hearing weird clicks
(almost like single-sample clicking) in the drums. WTF? =/

Can SoundCloud not properly encode a 24/96 WAV file or
something? Tune sounds totally worse as a 16/44.1 128kbs MP3
or whatever the fuck SC does to it.

Oh and Barcode, you can go ahead and get fucked. Anyone who
makes music for any reason other than for their own pleasure
SHOULD be questioned. If there's something so wrong with my
"rhythm track" why don't you link me to something you've
done and show me how to do it right? However, if your tunes
forgo the use of 16th-note subdivisions I'm curious as to
how good they could possibly be.

jesus CHRIST! That is NOT what a sub bass track is supposed
to look like!!!!! Do you even produce with a decent
subwoofer?

really, have you ever looked at the spectrals from other
tracks? clear bass is not full volume at all frequencies
below 250 Hz. that image just hurts my brain, and i haven't
even listened to the track. okay, i did for a second, but
didn't stick with it.

either way, pleeeeaaaase fix your sub bass. it sould be one
clear peak, hovering anywhere between 60-250 Hz, and
whatever upper harmonics you have. basically a sinewave.
then you can add a second sine slightly detuned, but really,
that is NOT how you produce bass. It just looks like you
took a synth with very little bass and cranked the low end
on an eq, which will sound muddy as hell.

cut out the low end of the bass synth you have and have a
sine wave generator play the same line at the lowest or
second lowest octave (c0-c1) and you'll be getting
somehwere.

this" is what a proper bass track should look
like. it's actually a fully mixed track, but you get the
idea. you want that fat low peak, not a shelf.

there's absurd overload of bass, which means nothing can

I don't know why people are giving you so much grief here.
Jealousy maybe? It's a good track. Hedphukker is probably
right about the fat low peak instead of a shelf though. It
is sort of muddy. Maybe do a separate more focused bass stem
for the mastering guy to work with.

yeah I think if you'd sit down with the mastering guy a

maybe see if you can give him the separate tracks? so he can
do some mixing before it gets mastered.

there is definitely a few valid points made in this thread
regarding the sound of it. but i see the purpose of a track
like this being released, especially when you compare it to
whats out there at the moment. i like what you did with the
vocals. i don't like the wobbly lfo thing, its not my thing
at all.
