theres so much focus on the climate and environment nowadays, and in a way its kind of backwards thinking. shouldnt we be thinking in ways we always have until now, our progressive ways? i see humanity has a highly technological species. we have been doing some sort of tool making for thousands of years, and our brains have been dreaming as well. we are made for technology, not nature. i believe the way we live now is extremely pleasant, and it condones thinking rather than hunting. the question is, how can we live like this and survive? if the planet goes to hell, we probably will too. the problem is we are too dependent on the planet. we should think about ways to not be so dependent on it. i think that creating technology, and even modifying the human body is the step forward. you cant look at all the stuff we have produced and say this is not the purpose for us. we are not made for living in caves and hunting animals. we are made for something much larger. too bad we ended up on this planet, but i think we can get out of the situation with a few black swans and voila, we're in space driving around the andromeda galaxy. |

heres some more food for thought imagine a future far far away from today. we are able to create air with a device in the quantum or string world, and we are able to do it for an entire ship in space. if we were able to create air at will, easily and cheap, it would solve a lot of problems. imagine if we could draw energy from stars or even more esoteric energies, and a brand new transportation system in space. it has always been my theory that humans can in essence be gods. the key to all this is in creating ways to influence and modify how reality works, especially in the very microscopic quantum levels and beyond. if we can convert one type of energy into another at will (dirt -> water/air) we've come along way. but it doesnt have to stop there. theres also a lot we can do with our own bodies. there are a lot of illnesses to be cured and faults to be repaired. the point isnt about how to do this, its that i believe we can do ti. i believe having a purpose of constantly unraveling the secrets of the universe and creating more opportunities for ourselves is as good a purpose to live as any. i would rather go in this direction than the opposite, namely some kind of apocalypse that reverts humantiy back to tribes and the stone age. |

guybrush, what do poverty rates have to do with this? ampi, we have in a way transcended nature already. by creating something ourselves and not just using what we were given or nature was given we have. i think its a very simple concept, modify something already existing to create something new. if that concept can also evolve, who knows where it may end up. who knows where our influence could end in this universe. a black swan is a scientific or technological discovery that was unexpected btw, something not foreseen. |

ill also tell you that if we manage to move things into space or at least get new type of energy, all these technological advancements can help ALL of humanity live better. while i dont think my theories have anything to do with the state of the world now, since you brought it up you might like to think about that. we live in a place where we are locked into a capitalistic system that creates lesser fortunate people around the world, and technological advancements on a great scale can help EVERYONE get jobs and can help humanity evolve into something completely different than current economic and political systems. you brought this into my thread like im supposed to be ashamed for not being poor, or as if im not realizing how lucky i am to live in a peaceful rich country. well screw damn you then, i already know that. i also think that the way to bring humanity forward into a peaceful and propserous future is through technology and advancement, not through war and apocalyptic settings. and yeah it is idealistic and even naive, but maybe it isnt and it could happen sometime in the future. |

@ cx, Humanity to me isn't one organism, it doens't act as a whole and therefore trying to get evryone to upgrade like this is really a romanticized idea more than anything else, it's more complicated. First there would be organizations and various people with differing motives dealing with this adaption to a space environment. Look at all the people even now who are trying to fund concepts and ideas that are moving towards this goal. Humans are individual creatures that thrive on their own individual needs and desires, and to assume everyone would want to move away from the evironment that we have messed up here on Earth in the hopes of transcending this environment is not really forseeable. Maybe a select few, but i'm sure 3 world wars would take place before anything like that is actually set into motion. |

Yeah good points, I guess you're right. But the optimist in me still holds close the idea that we will one day grow beyond our current system of function, and that technology will grow rapidly. Like look at the microchip or the internet, in the 30s it would have been science fiction and unbelievable that people would spend 10 hours a day on the computer in the future. But it happened. All we need is the opportunity to do so, and our social evolution will guide us into how we use it. I would rather have an optimistic goal of all the things I've stated above, than think that we would be stuck here forever. let's call it the futurist in me.. There are of course many issues and things one could debate, but frankly guybrush removed the spark i had when i made this thread and i dont really feel like it anymore. |

i'm sure something like that could happen in the future, but with all problems with the United Nations and other global organizations just proves how intricate and diverse our species is to ever come together in that way, i think i can see an apocolypse type scenario playing out before any other. Personally I believe we will migrate to mars, this planet will die out which is inevitable. This technology you speak of, it will be too controversial for everyone to conform to. causing a chaotic divide between man-machines and normal humans. But only the wealthy can afford to migrate, so many people will be left to perish on a decaying planet with no chance of survival . This would be a kind of reversal of how religious people believe the end to be. the good souls get left to die and the rich bastards get to live on a new red paradise mars. The process of engineering a new planet habitable for humans is called 'terraforming', we're pretty close at launching a manned mission now. we can inhabit mars and make it similar to earth over a long period of time, this is not far fetched at all. but how? As you know mars is damn cold, there is no eco system like we have here, no air to breath, 95% carbon dioxide and about 5 % nitrogen .... not good! so we need to fix it The first thing we need to do is warm up the planet, we know how to do that on earth, so we do the same thing, by injecting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere it would create a green house effects and warm it up. We know there is water on mars, so this would melt and (excuse my lack of scientific knowledge) make an eco system like here, with a higher temperature and weather patterns we could breath the air and with no need for protection suits. We can bring our own shit from earth, things to grow, like trees, plants and vegetables etc animals and use chemicals to help the soil to become fertile . This is a realistic vision of the future of mankind. |

yeah i agree, good post.. it's what i fear the most in some ways. this idea actually comes from all the evidence our species have showed towards creativity and brilliance when it comes to art and science and everything else. i just see so much potential, but of course there is a lot to stand in our way, and in all reality it wont happen, which is a shame. but i dunno, i hope we can at least get out of our current problems and have another good 500 years of creativity and diversity in science/internet/etc. these times we are in now i feel we are much closer to some new way of living, rather than the old way where you only focused on shit right in front of your eyes. these times we have the time to think and contemplate, to enjoy and dream.. its a pretty weird time. |
