i think its an optical cd reader with a cd painted with b/w
squares, so that you get a continuos square signal, a bit
like a digital oscillator or something

From an electronics point of view, I don't really see the
point of this.
Seems to be more "smoke and mirrors" than anything useful.

I think the spinny disc thing works like a tone wheel in a
Hammond organ.

id call it aesthetics instead of smoke & mirrors.
