As a group here we should banish the term 'IDM' and really seriously come up with a name that will do this creative electronica justice. I would really really hate to answer 'what music do you like' with 'IDM'...cause you're bound to answer 'what is IDM?' with 'Intelligent Dance Music'. That really puts the other person down. I don't think it's fair at all. It's really hard when you start to think about it...what would you name it?

Well, its less condescending than the term IDM, and it will take you just as long to explain.
I usually just list off a couple artist names and if they still don't know what you are talking about just say it sounds like, then just say its complex computer music and leave it at that.

This is quite a common dialogue in my daily life:
*playing some autechre/afx/whatever*
someone: "is that techno you're listening to?" me: "no, it's NOT techno, damn it"
basically happens every day...

I hate IDM. I'm not the smartest man in the world and I listen to it.
I've always liked to thing that it's the music that is intellegent. It has a life of its own, almost artificial intellegence.
Artificial Intellegence Music
AIM
I normally just say Aphex, Autechre or I say "Underground digital/electric music"

i just say electronica, it encompasses everything i like - idm, drum 'n' bass, glitch, trip-hop, ambient, acid, experimental sound stuff, instrumental hip-hop, etc.

I find that most electronic music can be put under genre titles that don't come close to describing what the music sounds like. Garage? Jungle? Try explaining to someone what a breakbeat is.

Steve, That's what Ray Charles said, when he originally made music 50 years ago he was mixing gospel with blues/jazz etc and media wankers were asking him what he's doing. He said 'there is either good music or bad music and that's it. I hope I'm doing the good music.'
that's as descriptive as you need to get if you are opening a conversation with someone.
If you feel you need to slot yourself in with a restrictive genre for an overall identity, say 'I am IDM me, I love electricmusic' in a pre-programmed robotic voice.

still dont see the fuss I think we are a bit stuck with IDM..say a newbie comes here..reads about some bands and styles and then goes off and plugs..say GEM or avantironica..or what ever else jury rig here..into a search engine etc..aint gonna turn up squat now is it...
there's vast resources available for IDM..heck even mp3.com has finally acknowledged it..and am loving putting my stuff under IDM category...
