it seems to be slipping under the radar, but stars of the lid is currently playing live across the united states followed by a few uk dates. they'll be in minneapolis on 4/21, and they do not tour often and i seem to recall that there are a few fans floating around here.
sorry i didn't mention it sooner...

I considered driving to LA to see them, but it's too far. I'm bummed. I also wanted to get my mitts on the tour CD - it's pretty darned good.

straight is fine, but high is likely better. even if you're straight you're going to want a comfortable chair. they're playing in an old decrepit theatre here, with crumbling brick walls.
i believe they are performing along with a string quartet, but i'm not sure what the dynamic duo will be playing/manipulating.

"the tired sounds of..." is a regular for falling asleep to, lovely album, up there with radio amor for that sad ambient weight. mind you, i can't really imagine what they'd do as a live act to keep things engaging, merzbow covers set maybe

do they need pyrotechnics, flashing strobes, colored lights and fog machines along with projected films of brain surgeries and such?
it's a show for sound people more than a show for show people.

LA show is on the 14th, first show of the tour, just two days after Meat Beat. i'll report on the state of the live show CDs or buy some for people that can't get them if they allow that.

heh, i know, i know, i was just being flippant because their stuff tends to put me in a very particular sort of half-sleepy state, it's not something i usually go out for. i'm sure they'll be great, the string quartet thing sounds very interesting

i love their music, but i don't think it's the kind of thing i'd go for live. not unless it was a sit-down venue in some grand theatre or something, then it takes on a more classical context (which may actually be how they operate, i dunno)

the show here is as you describe, an intimate, sit-down theatre as opposed to a club or sterile arena-like venue. i get the feeling that they are choosing venues carefully.
SPD, what's the venue in LA?

i saw them at the southern theater in minneapolis, it's a great venue, very intimate and good sound. i ate a space cake before i went. it was excellent, and there was only one missed note. they actually played with a string trio, while they manipulated guitars, samplers and an occasional keyboard (the source of the missed note). they had very absorbing visuals projected behind them also.
all in all, much better than a parrot head cruise.

i don't like boston much either, but the mfa isn't so bad for a venue and i suspect it will be worth it either way; i've heard a number of good reviews

Saw them last night in Newcastle -- sounded brilliant, especially the rich bass samples. The church settings is perfect for them, and the visuals, though basically colourful kaleidoscopic images, worked well enough.
Lots of cool equipment too; 2xMIDI guitars for the samples, keyboards for more samples, an upright piano, string trio, and loads of nice pedals, including some boutique-ish z.vex distortions, Boss Loopstations etc.
They had the laptops closed, under the keyboard stands too, which helped -- performed to the audience rather than to their laptop screens.
The support acts weren't particularly interesting; the first was an atonal folky drone/mess; the second was better -- two guitarists playing heavily reverbed swells, not unlike something by Roger Eno.
Good stuff. :)

well, it was an amazing concert. they had the same setup csl described, with the visuals projected directly onto the church architecture itself. a really clean soundsystem, which shook the very foundations of the church when the bass dropped. it was packed too - at least 80% full, with what I estimated to be about 200 people. everyone i spoke to was really nice, with a diverse range of characters. they also gave us a bonus encore.
the support act was ok. pretty standard post/instrumental rock but i didn't mind that so much. the soundsystem was clearly tuned for SOTL though, as the vocals were totally lost in the mix (though maybe that was the intention, i dunno)
anyway it was all about SOTL and i think most people walked away very happy. a great night.
