Fucking fanfuckingfucktastic. FUCK. Well, if you like The Mars Volta. They've just grown far better at their whole dynamic and songwriting in general on this album. Top flow, energy and melodies. I love them for how honest and enthusiastic they are about their style. They just made 2008 start amazingly for rock, I think.

really loved their first album... enjoyed their second a bit, the third i felt was TERRIBLE CRAP (which led to post-crapify their previous releases), and the stuff i've heard from this one sounds just plainly annoying and useless again. weird band, but not weird enough. pseudo-avantgarde-pop-prog-ADHD-emo-rock? c'mon...

You are right about the third album. It was utter gash.

I don't see that at all. Amputechture rocked in my opinion, really awesome tunes on that one except Asilos Magdalena which was a bit too 'spanish' for me. "Not weird enough" is a comment that hardly even deserves a reply.
Frances the Mute was pretty shitty though (the 2nd one), a lot of bad ambient and an annoying concept overall. Very disappointing after their tight, fun debut. Got lost in too much experimental and bad shite.

I didn't know it was out yet and yes the third album had few redeaming features. I still want to see them headline, I saw them with System of a Down. They were good but far too short a set.

Cool! I'll check it out.
I really enjoyed their first album which had actual songs. The latest releases have had too much prog rock wankery, in my opinion.
I just checked the tracklist on this album, and it looks like they're going back to a more song based structure. That's a good thing, I think.
Here's the tracklist:
1 Aberinkula............5:44 2 Metatron...............8:11 3 Ilyena..................5:35 4 Wax Simulacra......2:38 5 Goliath.................7:15 6 Tourniquet Man.....2:37 7 Cavalettas............9:32 8 Agadez................6:43 9 Askepios..............5:10 10 Ouroborous........6:35 11 Soothsayer.........9:07 12 Conjugal Burns...6:35 Release date: Jan 29, 2008

This new album is both coherent as an album and loaded with fun, melodic songs. It's much more reminiscent of their debut, but with just the right dose of more "complicated" composition.

So it isn't out yet...
How have you all heard it? I hope to god you haven't been doing piracy, you are aware that it funds organised ship invasions and treasure burying.
