Many of you disappoints me. Is it so hard to stay out of
trouble?

Another way to approach the problem would be to perm. ban
all members on my list of troublemakers, which by now are
considerably long.

I'd rather have you ban some old folks than shut it down for
the kids... or the other way around.

But if the majority are voting on "Let it stay", some bans
will be made.

Is it people starting arguments or just pointless nonsense
posts that annoy the most?

it is unfortunate that it has come to this, but sad as it
may be, some people here could probably benefit from an
old-fashioned (virtual) disciplinary spanking!

the answer is pretty simple. permanently ban everyone who
votes to shut it down - because why would they want to shut
it down but still keep posting?

Then do so. Frankly, that's what you and the crew should be
doing.

They're trolls, Phob. They get off on messing stuff up. They
will not learn or stop doing wrong.

Do away with them and let's move forward.

Thanks.

both are annoying.

the general quality has fallen while the number of flamming
posts have raised.

and there are always these people who are getting involved
in topics which are initially NOT directed to them. IGNORE
is the keyword here.

another idea. lead by example - close more threads and make
sure you explain why at the end of each thread you close.

offline Jarworski from The Grove (United Kingdom) on 2003-08-02 19:56 [#00806087]

I dunno man I'd miss it if you shut it but understand if you
did, that's all there is to it. Take whatever from whoever's
opinion you respect on here and go from there. I think the
number of daft topics hasn't changed that much, the
community has certainly grown so more chatting is going on.
The real problem is, do you want to shut this place down
because of the people who are trying to shut it down
themselves?

of hand set up a chat room and/or get rid of the point
system.

eh. why would people put down time and effort to, as you put
it, 'close down' a site (like this)?
I mean some people may be offended by things, or a website
may break the law, etc, but this is just a nice site...

not saying you are wrong; just wondering what their purpose
is...

i find it pretty amusing that someone would post just for
the sake of upping their points. i just post whenever i
have something relevant to say. spamming threads are pretty
sad.
i do agree that a chatroom might be a way out for the
attention-deficient though.

Perhaps that was an extreme way to term it, but they're
obviously detremental to the state of the board, and have
serious influence with regards to repercussions that occur.
I don't know how you could solve this, as anyone who is
slightly antagonistic could possibly fit into this category,
and if you just ban everyone who you feel is derogatory to
other members then you could suffer a backlash. It's your
board man, do what thou see fit.

change the status system to moderator defined, i.e., model
professionsal / pushing his luck / internet clown / moaning
minnie / whatever. that would be great!

I think earthleakage's e-mail warning might be a good idea.
It's easy to hide behind a messageboard name, it's quite
impersonal when you get your wrists slapped by a mod and it
makes some feel 'cool' to be rebelious infront of the
class.

It must be boring + annoying having to police the messages,
I know I write some crap too..... but it was earthleakages
fault.

Good luck with the new site though!

good suggestion: i like the mod-defined label system! at
least that way we'd know what sort of quality of posts to
expect from an overanxious member of the board.

but it would be a loss to see this board go up in flames
over silliness getting out of hand.

I really do think thats a good idea...

Like, keep the addict thing etc... but for offenders, have
"warned" and then "warned twice" and then after that its a
ban.

This way it would really keep it together. I think alot of
people do stuff, they get scolded, and then they stop, and
the mods forget about it, and then it might happen again
later. This way, its kept in check, and there is no
ambiguity.

No no no, don't shut this place down, it would be like I
lost a limb, or at least a finger. It's not that bad. Theo
Himself has to stop being the badass on campus though. Who
else is on the shit list?

About the status thing... I dunno... some people might
consider it a badge of honor! ''I'm so bad, I'm such a
rebel, look at me, the James Dean of Xltronic'', etc. It's
a funny idea (and I'd have fun setting you all to ''walking

want to talk to like minded people about creative things and
i don't think it shoud be sacraficed for a few peoples
stupidity.

Banning is the way to go imho.
