from a survey in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN:

"A religious campaign to block the teaching of evolutionary
biology is taking an inexorable grip on the US..."

"...a startling 45 per cent of Americans now believe God
created life some time in the past 10,000 years...our nation
went from the Earth to the Moon a few years ago, and
discovered these worlds date back billions of years.
Now...they even argue that dinosaurs and humans coexisted,
like they do in The Flintstones."

"Ohio is considering banning evolution teaching, and even
New York and Massachusetts are turning against evolution."

A "religous" aquaintance of mine tried to tell me that
dinosaurs and man co-existed. I really wasn't in the mood
to argue with him so I had to walk away. I don't know how,
or more importantly why, these ideas get spread.

I don't know about those statistics. Separation of church
and state is very important in public schools around here.
I don't know about private schools...since i didn't go to
one, but I live in MA and it doesn't seem like a
hyper-christian state to me. Still, with George W. wanting
to give out government vouchers to religious schools, i
dunno. I really don't want that guy as president.

oh. take a look at this... hehe

well children are educated to make money rather than for the
joy of learning. my wife's friend, in senior year, moved
from america to brazil to study in a brazillian high school,
and had to return because her education was
insufficient...and brazil is designated as a third world
country...

*sigh* i guess money's more important than moral values to
the government. and when they consider moral values, they
probably only consider religion. i think it's true that one
can establish their own morals by adopting what they feel is
right to them personally rather than be a religious sheep
and not take initiative. i guess it's too late for those
who've had the religious implant from their childhood to
change their values, but i guess it's not important anyway
if society's run chiefly on money.

ask why... why does the ideas in "evolution" bother people
so much?
what is the motivation for hating "evolution"? the basic
science of how genes work is hardly controversal, just about
everything we eat in western society has been bred for
selected characteristics to a very large extent, so the part
about how things change thru selection of characteristics
cannot be what bothers them.... so what is so evil about
evolution?

people want to seperate themselves from all other creatures
and believe they are "better". people want to believe the
world is much younger because it make them and christian
society seem more important. people wantto believe that the
world was created specifically for white christian society.
plus, the long unspoken reason that offends southern
americans so mush, when someone says that humans come form
apes from africa, they interpret that you are saying that
white people are descended from "niggers", and in the
rascist mentality, no matter how white you look, you still
are a "nigger" if you have so-called "nigger blood", basic
simple rascism.it has nothing to do for the search for
objective truth, it is about creating a truth that makes
them feel important.

they tell you that "God" created himself... end of
discussion, so ya gotta have "faith". bleh. seems like
such an empty answer, that really does not answer any
questions... but you know... "God works in mysterious
ways"... so, if you have that mentality, why is the
"evolution" world view less valid than the fundamental
christian view... because they don't LIKE the implications
of the scientific view... i mean, if "god" works is magical,
mysterious ways, anything could be true, we cannot then
trust our senses then anyway.

... i think that christians are degrading their "God" by
ignoring the reality of his "creation", they are selfish and
self-righteous in their view. i would not trust their "God"
anyway.

... has anybody read Nietzsche? i think i'm gonna pick up
one of his books soon...

I was just talking to my girlfriend and she asked me the
same question :-) I can't give an answer to that question,
but there are much more proofs for a big bang than for god.

What did create life? There are many concepts for the
creation of life. Scientists prefer the version of
bacteriums which lifed 1 km underneath the ocean surface
near vulcans at 100-150°C.

Sorry that my reply takes so long but my scientific english
isn't so well.

I think its bad that the state seems to want to make
decisions despite what the parents think. What if you are in
ohio and you are a secular family. You believe in evolution
and the big bang and you think the whole idea of god is an
explaination for simple minds. Now your kids are forced to
believe in someone else's viewpoint that you dissagree in.
What the hell is going on?

the idea of creationism makes people feel very special..
the whole universe was created just for you, and you were
created in the image of a perfect god
..how satisfying!

its scary that the worlds most powerful (by far) country has
such an uneducated public, who are willing to actually ban
the teaching of evolution just to satisfy their own
religious beliefs!
i thought seperation of church and state was a pretty basic
idea that happened hundreds of years ago.. only in the most
'primitive' societies today does religion get taken so
seriously
its just dangerous!
it actually scares me...

to believe in God, is not necessarily to believe in
religion... religion is stupid... if you believe in God,

and a little sidenote, actually some forms of buddhism
worship Buddha as a god I believe...

I do think it's funny how so many believers in God can
renounce evolution. If you have ever had a mystical, deeply
spiritual experience, you have likely touched upon the
feeling of "oneness." Isn't this exactly what evolution is?
It's the link between all of existence. No clear lines;
everything just flows into everything else.

Please keep in mind that many scientific minded folk are as
blind as the religious (not all religious are blind, same
percent as the non religious). Two different systems of
dogma. The only constant is change (didn't somebody use
this phrase here recently?). At one point it was thought
that the Earth was flat. Believe that many of the things we
think we know because of science today will prove to be as
far from truth as the flat Earth. Those of you who are
strictly science minded are eating up your teachings just
like the catholics or whoever.

"all the conflicts over religion is because of man..."

how is believing in god and not religion not a religion ..
imho it doesn't matter what you believe .. people are always
going to disagree (eg. what i'm saying right now).

it depends what you define as a religion .. but one always
has a point of view (which i guess i sort of assimilated
with religion) .. one can never step "out" of ones point of
view .. and so - in a certain sense, one is as bad as the
other .. just from "my" point of view some are better than
others .. blah blah .. or something

2ndlly:

to me the question of whether god exists or not is not only
unprovable .. but irrelevant, in the sense that we aren't in
a position to pose the question .. doing so only
demonstrates the pervertedness of our reality.

Re: the us education thing .. quite alarming. not because i
think science is the be all and end all of things. - perhaps
the evolutionary/science pigeon holes fit a bit tighter
around what we perceive as reality than religious ones ..
and so can largely be deemed "more correct" or something??
But what seems alarming is what seems to me like
brainwashing (which can occur, imho just as easily - if not
easier with science)!

excuse my rant n rave .. but just had to add my measly 2c
worth also .. :)

well, to talk about the USA, i think the attitude is "WE'RE
NO. 1!" WOO_HOO! (imagine Homer)

England had that attitude back in the 19th century and
before, when they rationalized colonizing and forcing
"lesser" cultures to try to assimilate, for the "good" of
everybody (especially the profits of England).

its an attitude that we are no.1, the "alpha culture", the
leaders of the free world (the right and proper world), the
number one country and culture, led by the number one people
(white), and the number one religion (christianity), also,
in christianity, white people tend to consider themselves
the leading and purest race among christians. i'm not
saying that all americans say and think these ideas
literally, but that these three number ones in our
minds(religion, race, and culture) tend to warp our outlook
on others. for some white americans, no matter how stupid
or ugly or boring they are, in their minds, nobody can take
away the "fact" that they are part of the "leading" faction
on our Earth, very proud to say that they are Americans,
because it makes them feel superior.

now, "black" americans are different, poorer blacks
especially, they know they are not part of the number one
majority "party", they have a much different attitude (which
is often a refreshing change).

white americans are often absolutely convinced of their
righteousness and superority, and they can always fall back
on "WE'RE NO. 1!" to rationize it and anything. the ends
justifies the means.

I don't think that Canadians have nearly so much of this
attitude... more laid back.

does this explanation make any sense to you?
