If either all your æ or your afx had to be burned, which
ones should burn which would live...

..man i could've asked this in a less cruel way i think..
'burn' ?

take 2: Which one do you prefer? (æ<->afx)

probably this has been posted before..
though i'm curious if it'll become such a long thread as the
'æ is extremely overrated' one.. :D

everybody goes nuts on this topic.. 'cause it's not
discussable but just about opinions :D

still i think people will react on this

i could do without classics...

maybe tri-repetae...

lp5 will live, as will my On remixes disc.

christ I found the original downtown for 3 dollars... in the
sale bin! (on remixes)

I have loads of AFX cuz I like AFX. I don't give a shit
about AE but whatever... I just personally like AFX more. I
have like 2 AE vinyls and a shitload of Richard D James.

I still prefer Richard. Even though i'm starting to
appreciate Autechre more and more...

Their music just doesn't have the personality, and if you
will, the insanity of Aphex Twin.

When i listen to Aphex Twin, i do always get the feeling
that he could create a truly amazing album (more amazing
than the stuff he already released) if he would try just a
little bit harder...

Yes, exactly. He lacks the discipline. He comes up with
fantastic ideas, and other artists take the ball and run
with it, developing his ideas to their full fruition.

put together in a blender with carrots and whiskey. I'm a go
buy all them Bola disks. How many do he have?

All that's available from skam at the moment on CD is Fyuti
and Mauver. Fyuti is essential, Mauver is ok. There's a
Jello CD and 12" also on Peacefrog.

For the moment, it seems. Looks like Mauver is gone too
now.

You can probably get it from some online places - there
might be stock left.

I got tired of trying to get Bola from various online places
who said they had it and didn't, so I finally ordered from
the source.

"He lacks the discipline. He comes up with fantastic

developing his ideas to their full fruition.
"

YES!
Exactly!

And i'm starting to think maybe that's exactly what makes
listening to an Aphex Twin-album so exciting.

When you listen to an Autechre-cd... you just know those
guys did their absolute best to make the most perfect album
possible... it is very satisfying.

But with Richard... i don't know... the way his albums are
imperfect... he always leaves me wanting more.

Autechre can quench my thirst for good music, Richard just
makes me even thirstier! Which in the end, is more
exciting...

And by the way, let's NOT burn Morton! I'm sure we'd all
miss the little fella :-)

how does that work!?

afx doesn't really do his best, so I like him more..?

strange..

I would say: lets keep ae. exactly for the same reason
surrounded gives to dump them - its not about personalities,
its just about the music.

"afx doesn't really do his best, so I like him
more..?
"

lol, well when you say it like that it sounds crazy!

But i do not know how to explain how exactly this makes me
like afx more than æ...

It's like... richard will only give you a little glimpse of
the astonishing beauty he is capable of. You can only dream
about how it would sound to hear him go all the way. 50% of
listening to afx is the actual music, and the other 50% only
exists in my mind :-)

I think it really is brilliant... he's probably doing it on
purpose. I bet his best tracks will never be heard by
anyone, or he only uses a small piece of it in a song.

For instance (random example): Acrid Avid Jam Shred. Towards
the end of that song there is suddenly this amazing little
melody... you know the one i'm talking about :-) It kinda
sounds like it's being whistled (well not really, but it
reminds me of whistling). If Autechre would have come up
with that melody, they would have probably written an entire
8 minute long track around it.

But not richard... he just plays it for a few seconds, and
then it dissapears again. You can never grow tired of it...
and in my mind it goes on for much longer, and sounds better
than it ever could in reality.

I'm not saying i don't like Autechre... i love
autechre! But if i would be forced to choose between them...
this'd be my reason for burning the autechre-cd's... but it
would be a sad day if they ever were actually burned :-p

" its not about personalities, its just about the
music.
"

Yes, i agree completely on that. But i meant the personality
of the songs. I think Autechre makes "tracks", and Aphex
Twin makes "songs"... somewhat. The difference is subtle,
but i just feels his song have somewhat of a personality
that Autechre's don't.

especially 8-second long mini-Aphex melodies!

Well there's something to be said for the haughty natural
artiste rather than the craftsman - the guy who effortlessly
tosses off unpolished diamonds. It gives some of Richard's
best stuff an immediacy and naivete that you don't find in
ae.

Having said all that I think I still prefer ae with its
hints of posthuman intelligence. They picked up and carried
the ball clear out of the stadium and into Dementia V!!!!!!

That's it. That's exactly what appeals to me in Aphex Twin
:-) I like that term "unpolished diamonds", it describes
exactly what i feel is so brilliant about his music!

Whether you prefer this, or the posthuman intelligence of
Autechre... is probably just a matter of personal taste.

to say that someone would not take the time and effort to do
something properly is to say that they probably wouldn't
have bothered doing it all. especially in afx's case.

The best one is in the north west corner of st cats and st
marc, it's literally called soup and noodles. Try the crispy
ginger chicken and the tom yum soup. The big bowl dinner
soups are insane - like they throw in ten roast ducks and a
noodle factory.

this thread is a bit too filled with the "general AFX myth"
- he hasn't released his best stuff yet, he can do much
better but decides not to etc.

couldn't it just be that he IS actually doing his best and
people SO desperately want him to do something mindblowing
as his music in the beginning was..?

or, this is all you're getting..?

this myth just kind of irks me - seems illogical and frankly
kind of desperate.. keeping the dream alive etc.

oh well.

I think the little fellow is frankly intimidated by the many
electronic musicians with more technical skills and has lost
sight of the from-the-gut grasp of melody and song and
primitivism that used to be the bread and butter of his
style.
