"A poll made my Gigwise.com had a total of 3,000
participants saying on average they paid £4 for the album.
Multiply that by the 1.2 million copies of the album now on
fans' computers, and you get £4.8 million pounds!"

It's not a huge surprise, I mean they are fucking famous as
hell.
They make it seem like THE BIG BAD RECORD LABEL WAS STEALING
THEIR MONEY, but with out them they would NEVER be able to
make this amount own there own.

There are 5 million of bands that would not make 10 million
their first week, not due to talent, but due to fame and
popularity.

If aphextwin did this, he wouldn't see 10 million the first
week.

I agree. It's not just talent that gets you that sort of a
following, although I'm sure that can help. Without all the
press and exposure they got before through a label, they'd
never have been able to make this much without a label.

I don't think they have much of an anti-industry stance. I
don't think releasing it like this is a statement - its just
because they're in a position to do so and have a bit of
control over how its done.

indeed. from greenplastic.com:

What’s motivating the band to distribute the album this
way?

Just getting it out quickly. It was kind of an experiment as
well; we were just doing it for ourselves and that was all.
People are making a big thing about it being against the
industry or trying to change things for people but it’s
really not what motivated us to do it. It’s more about
feeling like it was right for us and feeling bored of what
we were doing before.

Why give people the option to pay whatever they want?

It’s just interesting to make people pause for even a few
seconds and think about what music is worth now. I thought
it was an interesting thing to ask people to do and compare
it to whatever else in their lives they value or don’t
value.

it's all about publicity when radiohead is in question. i
mean there's tons of nicer music but you don't see this much
hype around it. radiohead are good at selling themselves.

musics out there and bucking the system in the process, they
dont need hype or publicity, they are Radiohead, for christs
sake.

beatles theyre well good at assimilating (usually)
and theyve commodified their dissent very effectively innit

Yes -

recycle, "george", i wasn't agreeing with tolstoyed, and I
wasn't stating what I said in that post as my own personal
opinion.

I'm a huge fan of radiohead, and I can't believe what
tolstoyed said that "t's all about publicity when radiohead
is in question" and that "they're good at selling
themselves".

If inrainbows isn't all hype, why isn't Xltronic's donation
bar higher this month? I;m sure the people that payed for it
could afford a dollar or 2 for XLT.

Maybe radio head will donate 0.01% of their 10 million
(which would be $1000.00) to this message board. God knows
how many fans here supported them.

It's so funny because the same people who shat on venetian
snares for the dumbest things are praising the ten million
dollar band this week. I'm all for supporting artists ...
that need support.

It would be very cool if they donated all the money (or at
least 75%) to some charities or some music/art schools.

They would still have 2.5 million.

im sure they donate a lot of it towards the planet and take

Really?

Well I'm all for supporting artists who create beautiful
art.

That's the only criterion I find to be relevant. If I enjoy
its beauty, then I shall reward them with my respect,
admiration and monetary credit.
