Halo 3

I got it this morning, been playing the campaign. It's fun.
I'm surprised at how modest the graphics are, no match at
all for Gears of War and Bioshock. But the gameplay is still
very tight on Heroic/Legendary.

I don't really get the Halo hype at all though. The story
and characters are artless and I really can't stand killing
the waves of little guys, it makes the game feel so goofy.
And for console-FPS reference and system wars' sake,
Resistance for PS3 has much more dynamic gameplay and far
better level design. Why Halo is so massively huge is beyond
me. It's a really enjoyable FPS, but man.

The bread and butter is the multi though, I'll do that
later, Forge looks interesting. I mainly play FPS' for the
campaigns.

Ophecks - This thread will hit 200+, Ive seen adds left and
right and up and down for this game. Playing video games
isnt my gig, but I did think that the graphics on this
looked very good, Id probably rent is as a movie. The kids
dig Halo3, this thread will be around for a while Jay.

I don't really get the Halo hype at all though.

They want to sell some more Xbox360's. I was pretty excited
to see the Halo3 xbox, but was quickly disappointed when I
read that it doesn't come with halo 3. WTF why would I buy
it then?

Why can't the 360 be cheaper. All this membership crap and
over price shit is no fun.

halo 2 was better than resistance in some ways
singleplayerwise in my opinion. resistance's weapons were
dank as shit.

i'm getting halo 3 tomorrow. looks pretty good, i always
liked the AI in Halo.

i don't get the hype for this game...

*M$ needs money vista isn't doing well
---
and i don't get the fans of the game...

Its just another variation of Doom. its 2007...when did the
original doom come out? 90s?

and another thing...am i the only one to think that all of
these game companies owe a shitload of money to James
Cameron? With out the movie Aliens...these games would have
shit plots. If you don't understand me watch Aliens, then
play the first Halo...or the 300 other shitty FPS games out
there...most of the have the marines concept....alien life
forms....intergalactic wars etc etc. Fuck in the first Halo
the drop ships look soooooooo similar to the marines drop
ship in Aliens its ridiculous...

blah, let me know when Resident Evil 5 comes out though :)

Halo isn't anything like Doom, that's a ridiculously
oversimplified generalization. The only thing they have in
common is shooting things in a first person perspective. The
strategies, presentation, art design, level design, battle
flow, objectives etc are completely different. Never once in
Halo are you running through cramped corridors shooting
demons while looking for keys.

Anyway, I'm quite deep into the campaign and it's now
perfectly clear that the game really is basically just Halo
2 in HD. It's jarring how little has changed, and the level
design is as repetitive as ever. The Halo ''world'' is just
so artificial, I never get the sense of being anywhere that
could actually exist, interacting in a place of function and
being. Big shiny angular buildings that exist only as a
place for Master Chief to kill aliens, surrounded by vast
expanses that exist only for Master Chief to kill aliens
while in a vehicle.

But that's not really the point, so the game pretty much
delivers what it advertises, which is badass gunplay. Combat
is still great. Half the time it's Sesame Street Space
Slaughter as you mow down cute little Grunts, but the larger
scale battles with the Brutes can get pretty hardcore.

Don't think I'll put much time into the online, Orange Box
is just weeks away.

I guess the bland Halo universe only bothers me because the
game puts so much emphasis on its totally shitty story. As
long as I skip the cutescenes and go straight to killing
some shit, everything's cool.

No, it's not anything like Doom. Has nothing to do with the
graphics and everything to do with the play mechanics.

The strategies (game play), presentation (graphics&music),
art design (graphics again), level design, battle
flow, objectives etc are completely different.

*i hope the level design would be different or else there
would be a lot of legal issues. level design will change
since you can have lots more information associated with the
game design. its just an over glorified version of doom.

Never once in Halo are you running through cramped corridors
shooting demons while looking for keys.

yea instead you run around some alien planet shooting aliens
in confined areas to move the next level.

let me clarify, i'm not saying Halo is a carbon copy of
doom. its just in the same style of doom. run around shoot
things....etc FPS, so they add better graphics and music
over time. its still the same concept to me and its old as
a dried up piece of dog shit.

*halo and unreal are pretty much the same thing to me as
well.

I feel the same way about Halo that i do about Goldeneye 64.

They were both only captivating because it was some of the
first time home console gamers got to experience real
multiplayer death match. This brought a whole new audience
into the deathmatch world because until then most of it was
being done only by the ultra geeky computer users.

other than this circumstance both games are quite shitty
compared to the overall spectrum of first person shooters.
They were released at a key time, and quite frankly i think
thats the only reason why they caught on. They are not
quality games on their face.

Oh. OK, then Contra, or... Gunstar Heroes. My point is, you
can dumb down ANY game ''you just do this'', leaving out the
myriad differences that define the experience. In Gunstar
Heroes, you move to the right dispatching enemies trying to
reach the end of the level. In Mario Bros., you move to the
right dispatching enemies trying to reach the end of the
level. Explained so simplistically, they sound like the same
shit. But they're not. You're have to be really uninformed
to think Out of this World is like Gunstar Heroes, or
Gunstar Heroes is like Mario Bros.

It's really no different here. You're completely ignoring
the myriad intricacies that differentiate the Halo and Doom
experiences. You can do that for any game. Half Life is no
different from Serious Sam. Street Fighter is no different
from Virtua Fighter. Which is, of course, overly simplistic
bullshit.

i'm not trying to dumb down the game. when i played Halo,
quake, unreal, medal of honor. counter strike etc etc etc. i
just got so disinterested with the game play because it was
like playing the same game with different scenarios and
weapons...sure different objectives, controller lay outs.
its just FPS + x (theme)

i sort of understand your 2D game analogy there. its like
comparing metroid to mario. similar concept (side scrolling
platform game) but each entirely different and each entirely
enjoyable on different levels. i never once felt that after
playing of of these FPS games. so...its just me i guess.
i've played one, and i've felt like i've played them all
after awhile.

This isn't about whether you like Halo or Quake or any other
FPS though. You have to understand that a lot of people do,
and they decide which one suits them best because these
games really ARE very different from each other, whether or
not you enjoy or even understand the subtle differences and
dynamics that separate them from each other.

But yeah, RE5 is going to basically be 2nd best game ever.
Just behind MGS4.

Sign on, I'll kick your ass, Solchek. No actually I'm
ridiculously awful and just got my ass kicked on that
Narrows map, the floating sky fortress thing. The maps are
well designed. I don't think I'll get much mileage out of
the online though, I'm not a big fan. And I'm in a Warhawk
phase.

I done gone beat the campaign 45 minutes ago. It is REALLY
short and people died and I think I was supposed to care,
but I didn't. But all in all, an enjoyable romp, and it will
be well worth replaying... 4 player co-op and Legendary
sounds too cool to pass up.

The thing that makes Halo really stand out is the
multiplayer. My old boss used to have LAN parties at his
house and he would have big screen TVs, projectors, and some
regular TVs set up in his basement. Those were a lot of
fun. A lot of other FPS games' multiplayer modes just never
hit the mark the way that one did.

Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory was my personal favortie
multiplayer game on original XBOX. The game play was so
unique for spys vs mercs. Spys had no lethal weapons, but
could crawl around in vents, pull people off ledges, drop on
their heads. Mercs had lethal weapons and special tracking
gadgets but couldn't go all the places or do all the things
a spy could.

I bought the original XBOX version of double agent, and
while the campaign seemed pretty good, more or less similar
to the gameplay of chaos theory or pandora tomorrow, the spy
vs spy multiplayer didn't seem very good at all. It is
different from the 360 multiplayer so maybe that version is
a lot better.

Indeed. Pandora Tomorrow's online was revelatory for the
time, and Chaos Theory built on it. Double Agent was a
disappointment, but SC- Conviction looks to have completely
changed up the formula to more of a Bourne Identity thing,
hopefully they come up with another fresh take on online
espionage.

The campaign really is a disappointment to me, but not
length or gameplay wise. I bought it in the morning and had
it beaten before suppertime, but it was on an easier
difficulty, and I played it straight through with no breaks.
I just wanted to see the environments and follow the story
for my first run. Problem is, the environments are mostly
quite bland and the story sucks.

Gameplay wise, I don't think it's lacking in substance. I'm
going to try to beat it on Legendary. I can barely make it
through the first level, so this is going to be MUCH more
time consuming. I never did beat Halo 2 on Legendary, and I
tried, I pumped lots of hours into it. Plus, after that,
there's the 4 player co-op, which should be a blast.

Besides, most people don't buy Halo for the campaign,
anyway. It would sell about as well even if it didn't have
one. Warhawk doesn't even have a campaign and it's been
worth every penny times ten for me.

"I don't really get the Halo hype at all though."

Hear, hear. It's a good console FPS, but that's all.
There's a good reason Halo has largely been ignored on the
PC. It's not like Goldeneye which was markedly better than
its contemporary PC FPS games (Quake 2).
