i spent most of the film in a stoned apocalyptic shock, so i
feel like i really can't judge it onjectively. but i would
be interested to hear someone actually explain what they
disliked about it. i've heard a lot of people pan it lately,
without explaining why.

it wasnt a bad flick, as in "The Number 23"-bad, but it
wasnt that great either - i wanted it to be more of a "12
Monkeys" but it was just so so..

explanation....?

well...i don't HAVE to explain from the responce i've gotten
so far...

but look...

*if* let's say...the world should have a great
change.....just a wild idea here...

famine....

do YOU know where your water supply comes from!? f*ck...i
mean that'll kill most of us...

next...roits...murder...etc...

are you willing to actuall KILL someone to protect and feed
your fam?

probably not.

next...starvation....

yes...you die.

sounds like jollying hip-hopity bouncing with jurassic park
co-stars???

no. sparky...you're not some sorta "lucky duck" who's
somehow just trotting along the war-path with your montly
crue of an entorage, to run into a "friendly rebel alliance"
who's BDSM stly of kidnapping you turns out to be fun and
games when all uv a sudden!!! you find out it 's jurrasic
park!!!! yay!

then they lead you RIGHT to the greatest secret on the face
of the planet....

then you somehow just get to waltz right up the the mother
of the baby, and after about 5 mins of idle gossip and
chit-chat are elected the sole protector of the baby....

did i mention that people are killing each other just to eat
their bodyfat? please don't forget the turmoil of the earth
change...

so...strawberry*cough* goneja...and suicide red-bulls...and
kids in dreaddiesss sing along to the beat of your drum and
you clumbsly save the mother of the last baby on earth....

yeah...right...

it's tooo much fantasy....

this is for people who want to passively take part in what
is to come.

It's the end of the world...what makes you happy?

me? i'm reminded of the bit on titanic where the orchestra
keeps playing as the ship sinks...

hope to see you there!

P.s. yes; i'm still a monk...no it's not a cult....yet!
LOL!z0rz!

oh yeah...copy/paste that link from the hermaph...i wonder
if anyone knows what her bio means...95% woman? 5% male?
wtf?

okay well, that didn't make a ton of sense.
you are saying you didn't find their vision of the
apocalypse probable? you're probably right.
it probably wouldn't be nearly so exciting.
but on the other hand, it's kind of being caught well after
the fact, no?

anyhow, i see what you are getting at about gaining some
sort of pleasure in an end of the world scenario.
to speak for myself specifically, when i say that i was in
"stoned apocalyptic shock" i mean to say that it was all
very disturbing to me. it wasn't the sort of movie where you
are cheering at the massive explosions. maybe it's naive of
me to think so in this particular (stylistically
post-modern) day and age, but i didn't feel that the film
was really languishing in this grim spectacle. or at least,
not languishing in it is some detached strictly aesthetic
fashion (pretty explosions without consequence).

is it worth mentioning that if the film were indulging in
this ugliness, it would be pretty fucking far from the only
film suffering from this malady? that in fact, the vast
majority of commercial film is a bunch of pigs wallowing in
their own filth?
hardly lets it off the hook of course.
but then again aristotle talks about all this shit.
catharsis, et. al.

again, not an apology for it... in fact i think aristotle is
problematic. but no one actually cares what i have to say at
this point, so i'll just stop here.

imagine something making you so sick that you're thrown into
convulsions...and body starts to purge itself...

this is the model one may find if he/she explores the
Buddhist schools...well, the schools that one can earn trust
in...

I've attended many lectures on lavish fantasies...some
lectures...Ian Lungold comes to mind. Lungold's work is well
researched, and wrong. The mayan callender presents a vague
happening in 2011-2012.

The Buddha-minded have proven that for every sentient being
that exists, and for each thought that every sentient bieng
can come up with; there is a way to enter Nirvana...

In this light...many of the masters, Buddhist, Hindu, and so
forth, who are worth listening to; all say that the human
race can change it's destiny. This works from all sides...in
the since that we can play devil's advocate by saying:

"can we stop it?" yes.
"can we make a blissfull planet? all in harmony in
eachother?" absolutely!
"can we speed things up?" sadly...we can even speed it up.

I challenge the ppl on this MB...Research any
prophecy...think for yourself...who's more probable? what
you've found out? or the shiit movies out there?!

i hate to defend this movie, but i don't see it as
necessarily condemning... it is pretty harsh, but in the end
it is hopeful. stupid hopeful, but that's beside the point
here.

anyhow, i don't think you and i look at movies from even
remotely the same ballpark.

i don't think we are having a conversation either. which is
a little bit surprising.

so um. yeah. changing the world for the better is good. i
agree.

Disappointing film. Im too lazy to explain why. It just
dragged on and on. The best part for me was at the farm
house. It really went shit after. People are always driving
away from people running after them in films from the uk. I
like it. Its a unique way to create suspense.

"Children of men" isn't dark, wrathfull, or witty....so, i
don't find it harsh...however...the deportation bits can
strike cords...(no-one in my family has been deported...so
no cords struck here)

"but in the end
it is hopeful."

very potent, IMO; the scene where even the soilders took a
knee to the awesome power of the newborn's existance...

"anyhow, i don't think you and i look at movies from even
remotely the same ballpark."

this is called discerning awareness...like realizing the
detail of lotus pedals while still conscience of the whole
flower.

do subject and object really exist? do we have the means to
be unconditionall? to be "one hearted?" Many people think
that we can have "one mind, one heart, one consciencsness"
but have they attained it? Have *you* met any masters who
speak as they have?

???

the changing the world bit... I wouldn't make lite of a
serious situation.

believeability....*rolls eyes*

the reactions of the actors during many of the pivitol
moments made the movie less believeable...and yes....the
climax fits right in...the reactions...weak.

oh no i'm not making light of it at all. i take it very
seriously. which is precisely why i reacted the way i said
that i did when i saw the film. you could say i looked past
the film, which is what you seem to have done too... in a
different direction, albeit.

the source of my pithiness is probably the gaping
discrepancy between your general statements on spirituality
and your statements on the film. but then i suppose i'm
admitting that i had similar problems, so maybe it's not
fair to expect otherwise.

this movie doesn't matter to me very much at all... i
suppose i am just curious to hear what other people have to
say about it because my reaction to it was sort of different
from what i'm accustomed to.

but no matter what i'll never feel any semblance of guilt
for trying to read into something. god only knows why
everyone is so convinced that we shouldn't at all care about
things that we absolutely gorge our resources (creative and
otherwise) to create and receive.

in my experience effort in such matters always repays
itself.

about a man who has to protect a pregnant girl,

similar to "le temps du loup" by mr. haneke, imo,
where they doesnt even want to explain whats happening,
just human attitude/ reactions in an extreme situation

hehe

well, my irritation with the movie was summed up in that one
scene where then entire war stopped just long enough for the
dude to leave the building with the baby. cheesy, over
exaggerated, heavy handed, and unrealistic in a not good
way.

almost every aspect of the plot and the characters were
developed in this way. the impact could've been much more
powerful if it wasn't spoon fed to the audience.

:)

it's easier to suspend disbelief when the movie is meant to
be fantastical. ghostbusters 2 has a much lower threshold
for suspension of disbelief than children of men.

but like, when your entire movie hinges on human emotional
bonds, it becomes easier for me to get irritated by
pull-my-finger pre death jokes.

Best film i've seen, definately in the last year or two.
The sequence where the lead character is running through the
streets, hiding from the bombs and gunfire, chasing after
the woman and her baby who had just been snatched away from
him, was a continual shot.

Take a close look, the camera didn't stop rolling once, not
even when it was splattered with blood.

The whole sequence was roughly 15mins of solid shooting and
sitting there watching it on the big screen was amazing.
It was one of the things i was most looking forward to
seeing, and so one of the things that kinda sold the film to
me to actually pay to go see it.

Plus, i'm really not a fan of Michael Caine at all, i just
don't think he's as good an actor as everyone hypes on
about.. but i thought he was perfectly cast for this film.

Another thing that i really liked also.. remember the part
where that woman is explaining to the lead character what
the ringing in his ears was?

"that frequency is dying, so enjoy it while it lasts because
when it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again" ?
Throughout the film the ringing kept coming back, during the
gunfire/explosions and high adrenaline scenes.
Very affective small detail.

I dont think it is a single shot I think theres some clever
editing there. You mention the blood that gets splattered on
the camera. The same blood that somehow magically disappears
off of the camera lens during the shot and theres a fair few
points where the camera ducks closely behind objects
allowing very easily for edits to be done.

Also Michael Caine doesn't act. Hes just Michael Caine in
different costumes.

i have to say...the maturnal instinct between the "father"
and his "adopted family"...it's a gripping ideal, i'm in
awe,...

but the actor...Clive Owen...his performance was that
riviting...

Flutterby, the chase scene where the actor runs with the
bloddy camera chase, it's got flare...it's a decent scene!

haha! the bit with the ringing...nuance...it's a clever
detail, thanks for bringing it up; i havent noticed a
connectin between the "ringing" scene, and the combat
bits...

--
gotta still reinterate that the movie's subject matter
doesn't mesh with the actors...the way it corresponds with
how they act...no trauma...no "life and death
urgency"...plataeus out...Imgine the circumstances portrayed
in the movie...and take our inherantly selfish human
natures...this need for selfgrasping is painted very faintly
on the film...i guess the "proff's wife (i just dubbed
that)" being all tuned out is probably one of the better
ways to pour out the emotion... her bleek stare is a little
melodramatic, but purifyng in a scence...in the scence that
we are al being purified, clensed, or judged on our final
hours...

will someone make a movie out of *our* lives?

it is actually a continual shot.
The first of its kind ever attempted.
the director made a point of that being his goal to achieve
during the filming.
Obviousely when the blood has disappeared and the dude
enters the building, the continual shot has ended, but there
really is a solid sequence of approx 15mins filming with no
cuts i swear to god.
As far as i remember it's in the extras if you watch, it had
to be choriographed (sp?)

nanotech next time you watch the combat bits listen closely
in the background, you'll hear the ringing under all of the

However, the commonly reported statement that the action
scenes are continuous shots is not entirely true. Visual
effects supervisor Frazer Churchill has indicated that the
battle sequence was filmed in five separate takes over two
locations and then seamlessly stitched together to give the
illusion of a single take. Similarly, the car sequence was
filmed in six separate takes over three locations and then
stitched together, along with various other CG elements
including a CG roof. In an interview with Variety, Cuarón
acknowledged this nature of the "single-shot" action
sequences: "Maybe I'm spilling a big secret, but sometimes
it's more than what it looks like. The important thing is
how you blend everything and how you keep the perception of
a fluid choreography through all of these different
pieces."
